Part of it is that the price of Ethanol has gone way up recently, as producers try to meet demand for it. The EPA requires Ethanol, an additive in gas which causes it to burn cleaner, in areas with not-so-good air quality. This is all of Southern New England, and parts of Northern New England. Usually ethanol-treated gas costs about the same as regular gas, but recently many states have banned MBtE and switched to Ethanol, causing demand to surge and kicking up prices. In NH, Southern NH is required to have Ethanol gas, while the Central and Northern sections are not required to. Ethanol treated gas at the moment is about $.19 more expensive than regular gas. Right now gas is averaging about $2.96 in Southern NH, and $2.77 in the rest of the state.

Add on top of that our location away from the midwest (ethanol), and the oil refineries and it shouldn't be hard to grasp why our gas prices are always among the highest in the country as a region.. It should also be noted that the corn lobby was successful in getting the gvt to impose tarrifs on ethanol imports, which hurts places like the northeast the most.

I also ran into an interesting article about ethanol just now.. it's similar to an article I read a while ago in the economist that said that corn-based ethanol is terribly inefficient and that Brazil's sugar-based ethanol was a more viable solution (if only we had as strong a sugar industry as we have a corn industry)... only this one slams the sugar-based ethanol, too. it's worth a bookmark for future reading and maybe reference, at least to me.

edit: as for the mtbe... NH should get rid of that stuff NOW. There are wells on the other side of my town that are tainted with the stuff; dogs refuse to drink the water and the people who did drink it before they realized there was a problem have kidney problems, headaches, and other problems.

I can right off the top of my head think of a bunch of stations that have closed up shop over the last few months...

I have seen a few stations myself close up???? -_-

so gas is getting cheaper... over the weekend it was $2.92 at my station... now it's $2.86.

Yeah there's a few stations in CT, finally dipping below $3.00.

One noteable gas station closing is the station on Farmington Avenue in West Hartford by French Cleaners, Whole Foods and the Blue Back Square site....sure does leave an eyesore their

Also the Shell Station at New Britain Ave and South Rd in West Hartford by the Hartford line closed a few months ago

Another station in Newington by the West Hartford line and the Newington Industrial park closed.

I don't know about those ones specifically but most gas stations olny make about 5-10 cents profit on a galloon of gas, they make a lot higher profit rate on things insdie of the store (candy,soda,etc) and when gas is $3 a galloon, they don't go inside to buy that convience food and the stations go out of business eventually.

it's actually not easy to run a gas station because of these issues. it's all about location, price, and convenience. that could explain why those stations didn't make it.

I bet the state makes more of a profit, than the gas station owner. And the state doesn't even have to run it.

There was an article in the Providence Journal today concerning gas prices. Apparently the State of Ct added an extra tax on gasoline at the wholesale level. It is a per centage based tax that obviously increases as crude prices go up. This tax completely negates the tax reduction at the pump that took place 3 years ago. That is when Ct prices started to equal Rhode Island prices. The State said they could do this because of casino money. What happened?

BTW, prices in the Providence area are now as low as $2.79. I am sure that in Virginia they are down to $2.50.

I paid 2.44 in Western Virginia two days ago and 3.04 in Colchester yesterday. Am I imagining things or was there a time not too long ago when I would ride into CT on empty from NY to get cheaper gas? What happened?

that must've been a long time ago. CT has had some of the highest in the country that i can remember.
