Louisiana | Photo of the Day

Okay, I've got to say I appreciate the great photos from south Louisiana, but if I don't represent my region, my own people might disown me. :D

A handful from Elvis Presley Avenue and its world-famous Municipal Auditorium, home to the Louisiana Hayride radio show, which once was rivaled ONLY by the Grand Ole Opry. The ever-so-famous phrase, "Elvis has left the building," was first spoken in this very building by announcer Frank Page.

After I took the following photos and got into my car to drive away, a woman pulled up, got out of her car, and started snapping photos. This is undoubtedly one of Shreveport's most photographed - and most historical - landmarks.

Aside from Elvis, Hank Williams was also a regular on the Louisiana Hayride. Most people don't realize this, but Hank Williams, Jr. was actually born in Bossier City... in the neighborhood that now borders the Louisiana Boardwalk. Country music legend David Houston was also from Bossier City.

I like that planetarium, Richy. It looks large.

Here's one from me for today, titled "Bible Thumpin."

You know you're in a city in the Bible belt when you see this in your downtown...

But what amazed me even more was the guy riding his bicycle all around downtown with a live parrot riding on his handlebars. I tried SO hard to catch him, but everytime I'd turn a corner I'd see him and I couldn't go that way because of all the one-way streets. I really hate that I lost him... he'd have been my most interesting subject to date.

Actually he's representing a church from Sherman, TX... which is way north of Dallas, near the TX/OK line. Just spreading the word, I suppose. Very soft-spoken and gentlemanly.

Here's another one from today. I titled this one, "Shreveport has the BEST dilapidated buildings." ;)

Looks like something you would see in downtown New Orleans going into 7th Ward. The title of this pic is R.I.P.CooperProjectsEarhartGalvez.jpg

Hey Dan, thanks for posting the updated Google Earth NOLA Skyline. Recently I enjoyed flying(playing) around with Google Earth seeing 3-D skylines like Houston, Dallas, Philly, NYC, Cleveland and Chicago. I am glad New Orleans time has finally come with the 3-D skyline. Some other larger cities did not have skylines either. Wonder who took the time to scale those drawings, and how long did it take them?? Looks like even Harrah's new casino hotel is included.

I remember seeing a local commercial as Google Earth flew over Baton Rouge there was a 3-D State Capitol. Hopefully one day soon they will draw-up BR's skyline too, and it won't take them nearly as long as it did to sketch New Orleans

Thanks for tht shot of the projects Uptown, keep us updated

Great photos, guys! I've been out for awhile, so it took me quite some time to catch up.

Richy- You may have been using a different version of Google Earth, but with me, New Orleans had 3-D buildings in the original release, something like two years ago. Did that change later on?

And here's a shot of the 530 foot Entergy Center in downtown New Orleans, along with the large fountain in front of the Poydras Street entrance:

^There isn't much of a dairy industry in Louisiana. We have some small dairy farms and plants around the state, but I can't think of anything famous.

Louisiana is known for crops like sugar cane and cotton, offshore oil, and seafood.

YES, we have a dairy industry in LA! We have Kleinpeter Dairy, near Baton Rouge and Foremost Dairy, in North LA. We have just about anything in Louisiana!!
