The table below is from tomorrow’s Council packet & mentions ‘ODU Apartments’ at the corner across from McDonald’s. I suspect this is the development the article was referencing to for Raising Canes.D2E7C640-BBAE-4892-BF76-CA329EF4E25C.thumb.jpeg.814cc4921313981dc58223275312a1c0.jpeg

Excited to hear they keep developing along Hampton Boulevard. Would love to see them keep moving towards 38th. However, according to the last ODU BOV meeting, it looks like Raising Canes is going to lot 58 (corner of 48th and Hampton across from Gray's Pharmacy).

Edit; I think this is just a permit for demolition of that triplex apartment building on 41st Street. ODU Real Estate Foundation bought it recently and they have plans to build the new Health Sciences Building in that general area.

I was thinking it might just be a demo but was hoping it is something more. Good to see some specifics for their plans for the area.

ODU recently posted these renderings of the new Health Sciences building that will go on the open lot on Monarch Way and Killam, and the renovation of the Jim Jarret Athletic Administration building into a volleyball facility.

Looking at ODUs capital requests for the next 3 years (using the search at the following link), ODU has a couple big projects in mind.

A new $21 million police station on the east side of Hampton Blvd. The request includes money for land acquisition. I wonder what they plan on buying. Maybe the old textbook shop?

A new $128 million biology building, which also mentions they will renovate Mills-Godwin for a new use.

Also included are stormwater improvements and the already mentioned health sciences building.

ODU was recently awarded a $3mm grant from the Virginia Research Investment Committee to go towards the cybersecurity program. They'll be using $500k of those funds to build Cyber Innovation Park (estimated cost of $2mm). There is not much other information on the project in the article but this is the first I've heard of their plan.

Equinox is going to open their second location, this time in the former Borjo spot on Monarch Way.

Starbucks will also be opening a new location on Hampton Blvd in the Ted, with an exterior entrance. From the article, it sounds like the space that used to be the team store years ago.

Walked around campus this past weekend, got some pics of the new Chemistry building and Owens residential hall. Both of them are actually very nice looking in person. I'd highly recommend taking a look if you're ever on campus. I got a shot of the building itself and then a comparison shot to buildings it was near, to give a bit of context to each building.

Here’s a pretty informative article on the new buildings as well as the upcoming health sciences building. In the article it notes that the health sciences building will be built to leave space between it and Hampton Boulevard for a lot to be privately developed;

ODU is conducting a stadium feasibility study for the Bud (baseball stadium).

https://www.pilotonline.com/sports/vp-sp-odu-baseball-stadium-20210609-tvimk7udvnb5tmm47z3vgthjg4-story.html

I've been told that there are two options being considered and all of it will depend on whether or not ODU supports ODAF in getting state funding. If they do, the new stadium should be built in the next 3 years (1 year for the study, 1 year for design and then 1 year of construction). They would probably play in Harbor Park while it's being constructed.

If ODU does not support ODAF in getting state funding, they'll need to fundraise and pay for it themselves, likely leading to piecemeal upgrades as they have been doing the last 5 years or so (with the hitting complex, scoreboard and renovated rally alley).

It should be interesting to watch over the next year or so as this study is conducted and the big donors are contacted for support.

From the Sept. 23rd planning commission agenda are two zoning requests from the ODU Real Estate Foundation (pictures attached).

I believe this is the lot that the new Health Sciences building will be constructed. However, that building won't take up the entire lot.

I'm excited to see this agenda updated with their designs to see how they are planning on using the remainder of the lot.

You can see the full agenda at the following link:

The agenda has now been updated with some documents from the ODU Real Estate Foundation where they list the purpose of this zoning change as the following:

To develop a 7-acre multi-story mixed use development to include a grocery store, apartments, retail space and a new parking deck.

After a quick read I'm guessing that the plan is to extend Monarch Way out to 39th street, and then close off the portion of 40th street between Hampton Blvd and the newly extended Monarch way (or utilize the same space without extending Monarch Way).

ODU owns all the parcels around Central Radio too, so I'm guessing we'll see some movement there in the coming years.
