San Fransisco is obviously #1 since the cost of living is so incredibly high. Same thing for Boston and Hartford. Ironchapman, you can take into account places like Fayette and Forsyth counties as well as Buckhead as to why Atlanta may be higher. Also, I thought Augusta might be a little higher.

Hartford's cost of living is actually relatively low considering it ranks 6th in income. Hartford's average home price is lower than places like #89 Providence and much lower than #5 Boston. Relatively speaking, Hartford has a great "Cost of Living/Income" ratio.

The better way to rank this would be to rank it by a ratio of Median Income to Cost of Living. Figures like this by themselves are just way out of context and mean little.

I agree. When you look at the top 10, Atlanta and Minneapolis....maybe Denver have really low cost of living. I can only speak for Atlanta since I am most familiar with her. Atlanta's median price of homes is still below $200,000 so there you get way more bang for your buck.

They must have included Fairfield County in Hartford, not New York.

The greater Hartford area is home to many extremly wealthy communities. The greater Hartford area is home to many prestigious private schools, offices of major corporations, residences of CEO's of downtown Hartford corporations, etc.

Also an intresting one I noticed was Norwich-New London, CT. There are very wealthy homes and residents in parts of North Stonington, Waterford, etc. who work at Pfizer which has a major presence in SE CT but there are also the thousands of people who work at the area casinos doing the only jobs they could find.

I'm surprised that Rochester, Minnesota is in the top ten, though I'm not surprised it is high. The city is virtually controlled by the doctors and scientists of the Mayo Clinic. A large number of IBM employees must also contribute to the ranking.

What is it about cities like Fort Collins, CO, Salinas, CA or Appleton, WI that puts them so high on the list? Do they have "one-industry" economies like Rochester?
