Atlanta Photo of the Day

Two Atlanta icons in one photo:

The incredible Flatiron Building (1897) at Peachtree and Broad. Back in the 70's a friend of mine had his office on the 6th floor there, and I would sometimes walk over from the Equitable Building and see him. His office was right on the point, so he had spectacular three way views -- north on Peachtree and Luckie, and south across Woodruff Park.

Finally, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals (1907). The District Court used to be there, too, before the Richard B. Russell Building was built. In my opinion it's one of Atlanta's most beautiful buildings. It's so elegant, and very intimidating when the court is sitting en banc. They're just one notch below the Supremes, you know!

Very nice shot. I'm curious if that was taken with a digital camera or a 35mm.
Either way I think it's been digitally enhanced a bit. The sky looks like a gradient fill, and I think some of the "white" areas (e.g., the Polaris and the facades of the Southern Company and SunTrust buildings) have been brightened up, and the glow of the streetlights and some of the greenery may have been punched up a little, too. Nothing wrong with that, of course, as it's the end result you're after and this is a really nice one. Digital cameras have gotten so good that it's really hard to tell any difference from film, especially after they've been edited and saved for the web. Edited by Andrea

That's one of the reasons that I (and the rest of the amateur photograhers in my family) have waited until now to start thinking about getting a digital camera.

I'm sure you would enjoy going digital, IC. The things I like about it best are:

(a) You can take a million pictures and trash the ones you don't want. That's really helpful when you're a crummy photographer like me and 99% of the images are terrible.

(b) It's much faster and easier to transfer the images to your computer.

I'm still a novice when it comes to digital editing but there are a lot of fun things you can do. Like in that picture of the Varsity, it was actually taken under a very gray overcast sky. So I changed the sky, and also bumped up the red in the logo on the Coke building to make it more prominent. The picture of the federal courthouse is actually two images I put together (I didn't do a very good job, if you look closely), because my lens didn't have a wide enough angle to get the whole building. I also eliminated a car on the right side of the picture and faded out a building in back to make the courthouse stand out more. People who are really good at Photoshop can do some really amazing things.

I like what was done in the Peachtree Center image that Student posted, although I think the Polaris Lounge has been whitened up so much that it looks like it has been cut and pasted in. That's something you have to look out for, I'm discovering.

Merry Christmas everyone! Took the wife and son to Centenial Olympic Park on Saturday and had a great time. Believe it or not my son is only 2-1/2, but he went ice skating with my wife on the temporary holiday ice rink they have set up.

Ya know, it's not the Wollman Rink or Rockafeller Center, but a lot of people were there and having a great time. Downtown is really coming back.

Here are the pics:

Great pics, Newnan Eric! Centennial Olympic Park seems quite festive this time of year. Looks like you had a great time. Was it very cold (for a winter day in Atlanta)?

I might be going there tomorrow night, so there might be some pics from me showing up soon! :)

Thanks for the nice comments. We did have a great time and I thought it was a good crowd of people there. There was a mix of all kinds on the rink and everyone was singing along with the Christmas carols played over the loudspeakers.

And IC, yes it was quite cold. That's why Nate was bundled up like Ralphie's little brother from "A Christmas Story."

Now here are some photos from two weeks ago. The GC I work for is building a condo project in town. Can you guess which one it is?

That looks like the location of Central City condos on Ralph Mcgill?

You are correct sir!

We are having a tough time getting out of the ground on this one. There are a lot of dimensional problems with the drawings. Not really the architects fault though, they had to hold off while the owner got financing together on the project.

It should be done in October.

I was back in town for a wedding this past weekend and made a trip to the aquarium and CP. I took some really cool pics, but I don't know how to post them. Can someone help me out?

You need to upload the pictures to a hosting site. Try www.photobucket.com

It's free. Once you upload the photos you will see three options for addresses for the photos.

URL: http://
