The biggest differentiator is size. It's honestly a bit overwhelming -- each of the departments (deli, dairy, produce) is larger, the prepared foods area rivals a mall food court, the "natural foods" subsection is itself the size of a Trader Joe's. There's also substantially more floorspace for household goods, like kitchen gadgets. Beyond the mind-numbing selection, prices are competitive, service is pleasant, and quality/freshness are excellent.

One downside of this arrangement is that any one item could be in a few different places on the three-acre floor. It's not really conducive to a quick trip, except for produce or a hot-bar lunch. Their nearest distribution center is in central Pennsylvania, so I could also see how freshness might suffer a tiny bit if Cary remains the last point on their distribution runs.

Yesterday we finally got to see the plans for the Wegman's complex in Cary.  The street entrance reminds me a lot of the Ballentyne area of South Charlotte.  The streets of boutiques & restaurants remind me of Rockville Town Center in VA or Birkdale Village in Huntersville, NC.

I hope this puts even more pressure on CBL Associates, owner of Cary Towne Center, to do something to the failing mall.  Yes, IKEA may be coming, but that does not replace the mall.  One section of the mall will need to be razed, but what about the remaining portion?  If they don't de-mall into something nicer, they're gonna be stuck with a crapty outlet mall or something like South Hills, with this jewel right across the street from them.

Very nice...reminds me of the Avalon in Alpharetta and depresses me...what Waverly and Rea Farms could have been...
