GTCC has big plans in High Point

HIGH POINT — Guilford Technical Community College’s 10-year plan includes major additions at the downtown High Point campus as the college expands instruction targeting business, creative arts and the skilled trades.

College officials are seeking $148 million from Guilford County over the full extent of the $182 million plan covering all of GTCC’s campuses, which is focused on jobs in local, growing companies as well as new ones that have been announced in recent years, GTCC President Tony Clarke said.............

Not quite downtown HP but HPU is growing again with their dental school.  Look at this from the Triad Biz JOurnal today:

""High Point University's Workman School of Dental Medicine is quickly advancing. So far, it has broken ground on a new 77,500-square-foot, $32-million building, acquired eight dental practices across the state and ramped up its headcount to nearly 80 staff. See what's next for the first private dental school in North Carolina.""   1000 students have applied for the first 60 spots in the new dental school.  Seems to be well needed in the region and the state for sure.

Construction begins on 128 room downtown Sringhill Suites by Marriott in High Point. It will be within walking distance to Truist Point Stadium. Downtown High Point's  first new hotel in decades.

High Point has a unique opportunity as well with its gorgeous showrooms which gives a more modern look to its downtown than its two larger Triad siblings. Yes the showrooms have gobbled up a good portion of downtown but just imagine if these showrooms could somehow transform into mixed-use properties that work for the furniture market and downtown High Point year round. Then there are the development opportunities on other vacant properties. It speaks volumes that developers from Charlotte and Raleigh are now looking at downtown High Point for building projects. High Point's downtown is not only unique in North Carolina but its unique in the United States as well. There is no downtown in America like it and the city needs to use that uniqueness to its advantage.

Gonna be a lot of construction on or near that stretch soon. From this development and the 350 or so townhomes going up over by the corner of Johnson and the expansion of Skeet Club to 4 lanes.. theres a lot going on on that side of town.

Too bad NIMBYs turned doen the Publix on the opposite corner of Skeet Club/Johnson.

The Home Furnishings Market is in town this week. There has been much discussion about more hotels in downtown High Point to accommodate the market. The problem is the market is only held downtown one week twice a year. There is a new trend starting and they are called pop up hotels which are temporary accommodations for short term events in need of hotel rooms. This could be something High Point could look into because into. It keeps market goers in High Point so they are not spending their money in other cities. The city could provide entertainment after hours for those coming out of town. Pop up shops during the market is another idea.
