I can't seem to find and bring up a story in today's Providence Business News concerning the fact that the city will make both Empire & Weybosset Sts two-way streets by 2007. Do you agree? While I can see it happening on Empire I can't on Weybosset because of the way the street is shaped. Their doing this to improve the traffic flow downtown, but the only traffic jams that I run into are on Francis St and Fountain St.

We can't proceed on the garage unless Weybosset is made two-way. End of story. They're going to move the comfort station across from PPAC to LaSalle Sq.

That's what I was wondering about. I couldn't see Weybosset St proceed as a two-way street without the comfort station being moved. But isn't that an historic location/landmark?

According to our City profile, the Overall Density is 9,690 Persons Per Square Mile. I think that is for the city and NOT metro, but correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm just wondering about density after these big projects such as Gtech, Waterplace, 110, Westin II, Masonic Temple, and Grant's block/the rest of the lofts fill in. What kind of increase in density are we looking at? And since hotels always have a temporary number in occupancy, are they typically counted?

Are there any plans to make dorrance street two-way in front of the biltmore being that the street is two way north and south of that short one way section?

The article speculated that that could be a future option, it would make sense, traffic has to work it's way all around Kennedy Plaza coming from the south. However, it can't be done until/unless Emmet Square is reconfigured.

I think LaSalle Square is happening first, and planning and funding is still be worked out for Emmett. I would think we probably won't see anything at Emmett until next fall at the earliest, but I hope I'm wrong.

Personally, I think Emmett is a bigger problem than LaSalle. LaSalle has asthetic problems, and it's not ideal for pedestrians (though there are some walk lights that don't work, and making them work would do a lot for pedestrian access), but traffic usually moves through OK. Emmett is just a huge mess asthetically, trafficwise, and for pedestrians.

Are there any plans to completely redo the streetscape along Westminster? Now that Westminster is becoming high end, I would have to believe that streetscape improvements would make the atmosphere along Westminster even more attractive to residents and businesses.

Maybe new sidewalks with street trees, new light fixtures and street furniture plus new curbs and streets.

Not only Westminster st but Waterplace,g-tech, and Westin II... i think with all these projects, the city needs to improve streets, and def. widen sidewalks, especially all around waterplace...... but we all know how providence is with improving things

Westminster St. Streetscape from I95 to Olneyville Square is an Enhancement Project with RIDOT that should be nearing final design. Forumers from WBNA should be able to add to that. So are Memorial Blvd/Emmet Sq. Pedestrian improvements, which were on hold until GTECH was to be completed.

Any idea what 'improvements' are planned for Memorial Blvd.?

It's been a while, I can't really remember. I do remember a totally reconfigured Emmet Square though, with much shorter distances that pedestrians would have to walk across Exchange St., etc. I have a feeling that none of this will be looked at again until the Westin is complete, or nearing completion as well. I'd hope for a crosswalk on the western side of the Memorial/Francis intersection, that's something that has always been needed. And with the new Westin retail on that side, it will be even more.

I noticed the other day that they are tearing down what seems to be an entire city block on Weybossett street, across from Johnson & Wales. Anyone know what that space is going to be used for, or have links to articles on it?

Yup, Grant's Block, though the renderings in that thread are not what the current proposal is. It has been expanded quite a bit and we're hoping to see new renderings any day now...

Yes, precisely...

They're going to build the most economically viable <tower> and contextually responsible <tower> building on that <tower> site possible.

Intersting ProJo editorial. Mentions locating a casino (if it inevitably happens) at Fields Point, and other ways Providence can help itself....like sell parts of the Scituate Reservoir watershed for development (although he does say park development, I got kind of scared for a second...)
