The Burlington City Council will consider a rezoning request — the third for a Burlington landowner and developer — for a retail project potentially worth $6 million to $8 million near Alamance Crossing.

 

Property owner Ed Tam is asking for 7 acres east of University Drive, south of South Church Street and west of Huffman Lane to be rezoned as conditional businesses, which will have a maximum of five lots. Each of the buildings will be no larger than 6,000 or 7,000 square feet, Tam said.

There is also a rezoning request for a large tract of land on Long Pine Rd (near Outback) for more restaurants, a hotel, etc.

Just as the news broke that the Ramada Inn in Burlington had closed, a report Thursday said that Hilton wants to build a new hotel near Huffman Mill Road.

Tru by Hilton plans to open a 98-room hotel at 963 Kirkpatrick Road by 2020, according to the Triad Business Journal.

A spokesman for the the Hilton chain did not provide other details.

Hilton describes the Tru brand as “vibrant, affordable and young-at-heart. It’s energetic, yet relaxing and comfortable.” It describes its rooms as “smaller, more efficiently designed with comfortable beds, and 55-inch TVs with a premium channel lineup.”

Alamance County’s economic stability is near the highest it’s ever been.

The county is within the top 26 most economically stable in North Carolina, according to the 2020 Development Tier Designations report from the N.C. Department of Commerce....

Burlington Economic Development Director Peter Bishop is positive about the report.....

Alamance had the state’s sixth-highest population growth rate at 6.4 percent, and a notably lower unemployment rate at 3.9 percent. The median household income also increased by $1,854 from 2019 to 2020. These incorporated data points give Alamance its highest economic ranking since 2015, according to previous Development Tier Designation records.

New food hall proposed in downtown Burlington

went to downtown Burlington for the first time today.  Small downtown and reminds me of Statesville or Salisbury with one major difference a Fortune 500 HQ that being Labcorp.  They occupy a lot of the office space in buildings in the downtown and a major part of downtown.    Downtown Graham no photos seemed busier on this day but I think that is due to Labcorp employees working from home.

My grandmother was born in Saxapahaw in the 1910s and boy has the town changed.  It was a mill town where she was born at home there now a thriving little artist colony, tourist town with a renovated mill with condos, apartments, retail, restaurants, a brewery etc.  Here are a few photos from yesterday.  In the UCLA region Upper Chatham Lower Alamance LOL.   Right on the Haw River just a few miles south of Burlington Graham.

If the Raleigh and Durham MSAs are combined there is a real possibility Alamance County could be added due to existing commuting patterns.  Today Burlington has its own MSA which includes all of the urbanized portions of Alamance County. Over the years I’ve always thought Burlington should naturally be apart of Greensboro’s MSA since two cities have grown towards each other over the last 20 years, but with High Point joining the Winston-Salem MSA, i felt i clearly lacked the understanding as to how MSAs are formed. Greensboro and High Point are virtually the same city. 

Traditionally Alamance county has always been considered a part of the Triad. With the growth happening in Mebane and Graham it will be interesting to see how that dynamic changes.
