That's pretty wild. I find the comment "The Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino (replaces the Aladdin)" interesting. Is The Aladdin casino already considered too old and out of date? Isn't it only about 10 years old?? And are they planning on demolishing it???

I think the Aladdin was reopened in 2000 making it the newest joint on the strip (for 3 more days anyway). I'm assuming that Planet Hollywood probably just made a really good offer to someone for the property, hince the name change. The same thing happened last fall when Hooters bought the San Remo next to the Tropicana and MGM Grand, they were supposed to have changed the name by now I thought.

The Aladdin filed for bankruptcy and Planet Hollywood bought it shortly afterwards. Planet Hollywood had originally planned on building their own resort in partnership with The Aladdin, but Planet Hollywood went through financial hardships of their own and had to cancel the project.

Here are a few renderings of the project and its evolution over the years.

The addition of Trump Towers, Majestic and Ivana to the LV skyline is going to be awesome. I can see the Strip skyline extending all the way north to downtown soon. That would make for one heck of a linear skyline (putting ATL's to shame :) )

^ (edit: only in shear length maybe, not in terms of quality though)

What???  Las Vegas is in the midst of an incredible boom cycle right now.... sounds like gross mismanagement of their property to me.

Yes, I am not sure what happened there, but they were in the red from the start. I do know for a fact that they never received the foot traffic that they were counting on and . It was blamed on the entrances being poorly designed (above the strip and confusing) and the lackluster performance of the Desert Passages Shops (which was developed by Trizec Hahn--a developer known for their succesful retail projects). Planet Hollywood just announced this week that they are partnering with Westgate Resorts to build a timeshare tower (50+ stories) on the land adjacent to The Aladdin.....yet another highrise in Vegas.

The question I have is this- are all of these projects casions and are they all located on or near the strip?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Many of these condo towers are not affiliated with any casino group as far as I know (yet several are such as the towers going up at MGM Grand and the Cosmopolitan at Bellagio). I'd say at least 90% of these condo projects are located along the Strip or within a block of it. There's still plenty of vacant lots and smaller strip malls to build on for the time being.

The Trump Las Vegas

It was reported today that Trump Las Vegas is 100% sold out (all 1200 units) and construction is to start this summer. Article

Also, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino (just across the street from UNLV) announced their plans for a $1 billion expansion on 24 acres. This will also involve over 1000 condo and hotel units. morton.jpg

Construction is to start in August.

^edit: that's not me in the photo... probably the owner i'm guessing

Las Vegas is in the midst of an unbelievable condo boom!

The last time I did a survey, back in February, there were over 30,000 units planned for on or near The Strip and Downtown. Only about half of these will probably ever be built.

Already some are falling through:

It seems that all of Vegas' Projects are residential in nature. Are there any office, banking type structures going up in Vegas. I mean, I know it's a tourism Mecca, but all of the structures seem so grandiose, and flamboyant. Is there anything that's just classic? Any industry that's not tourism related.
