  1. I think that refers to the new office buildings just south of the airport connector on Jefferson Blvd.
  2. They salvaged the facade of part of the old mill when they built the Gardens Inn... The only thing that I'm aware of, is the site across from the Honey Dew donut shop at the intxn of Coronado and Jefferson (it's a restaurant now - forgot the name - begins with a "C") - the owner of the restaurant wants to build condos there...
  3. not yet (that I know of), but I hear the elevated moving sidewalk will have 'tie-ins' at various places to one day create a small matrix of indoor bridges along the corridor - all abviously leading to the train station/rental car mall and the airport terminal.
  4. yea, I'll say - 'about time' is an understatement! I hope to get more on this soon. Meanwhile - I'll be there on the 17th...
  5. you mean this story... http://www.warwickonline.com/warwickonline...2&Itemid=30
  6. C'mon - Wilson's of Wickford isn't practical - where else will I get my 'Rhode Island' neckties??? JK
  7. OK - I only Kent county but here goes: Warwick: fair schools, walkable but meaningless city center (sorry to any Apponaug lovers), some excitement. Traffic is a disaster but mass transit and overall potential is good. Some very nice neighborhoods, some terrible (sorry to any Oakland Beach lovers). I'd give it a 6 out of 10 based on your requirements. West Warwick: fair to average schools, walkable but very tired downtown, little to no excitement. Limited RIPTA bus service. Like Warwick, some very nice areas and some crappy ones. I grew up here and lived in Cowesset (just a bit behind the Station fire site), which was a great location (nice neighborhood, close to route 3 and route 2 'amenities' and at the corner of Warwick, East Greenwich, and Coventry. I'd give it a 6 as well. Coventry: very good schools, walkable in many areas, but no true 'downtown' - more like areas or villages. Typical bedroom suburb but overall pretty nice. 7 out of 10 (we moved here for the schools and the neighborhood we live in). North Kingstown: good schools, very nice and walkable 'dopwntown' (Wickford village) with things to do. Close to the Bay. Very nice neighborhoods. 9 out of 10. East Greenwich: same as North Kinstown.
  8. ...tell me about it! If I hear "next month" regarding the ground breaking, on emore time - I'm going to go crazy. I hear that once all the involved parties sign on the dotted lines, ground-breaking and construction will begin real fast.
  9. The official ground breaking for the intermodal center has NOT happened, but I saw graders and bulldozers smoothing the lot just a hour ago! The terminal renovations are underway right now. The first phase will create a new centralized queuing area for the line to get through security as well as relocated escalators, a new glass elevator in the middle of the lobby, a new information booth, new hotel reservastions kiosks (instead of the old 'wall of phones'), new concessions on the lower level, and temporary locations for things getting displaced during the remaining phases.
  10. ...and to the train station/car rental mall and concessions!
  11. Got a peak at the renderings of the car rental "mall" and the walkway. The walking "path" will be 1410 feet long - not in a straight line. There appears to be an actual attempt to put some architectural features to offer the walkway some "flare" for the lack of a better term. There will be 2 glass rotundas, 3 to 4 "entry" points/stairs to the ground along the walkway (for tie-ins to future development and even possible "branches" for a network of walkways) for pedestrian access from the short term lot and Post Road, and a really nice design where it ties into the street side of the Terminal building. 833 feet of the 1410 feet (59%) will have moving sidewalks and there will be electric cart availability as well. Airport "viewpoints" have been created from the angles the path of the walkway will take (versus the straight "shot" I was expecting). The car rental mall looks open and airy and should have some concession offerings as well. The walkway itself looks to be supported by pre-cast support columns (similar but smaller than the "Iway" supports we see along I-95 now)that will straddle roadways where needed (cars will drive under it in places both perpendicully and parallel) with angled light blue-tinted glass making up the entire sides and parts of the roof. It looks like there is an electronic scolling message board over the upper level roadway in front of the terminal and some street signage and possible advertising space where it goes over Post Road and parts of the airport roadway system too. Will share more when I can...
  12. The "wharehouse" concept calls for extra high ceilings. It will only be 1 story, but will have the height of much more.
  13. And while not a huge number, don't forget those who may be driving (or taking RIPTA) to Providence or Warwick for work - a percentage of those folks might find the train easier...
  14. Harrisburgh PA (MDT International) has a close in airport/highway/Amtrak station too...
  15. the sky bridge will also allow "stops" along the corridor for future tie-ins (a hotel, etc.). It sounds longer than you think really
  16. I hope the numbers favor a station - add in Warwick, Wickford, EG and the existing URI & Westerly stop and you'd have a great internal system to feed a line...
  17. "...where she has lived for 17 years ago." Lets see, the jet age began in the 1950's and TFG has been there since the 1930's. Maybe, just maybe you should have thought twice about moving there 17 YEARS AGO!!!!! ARGHHH - these people bug me so much. The maintanance costs for the people mover would have made the long term financial agreement with the car rental companies and other agencies cost prohibitive for what is really needed and that is a simple moving sidewalk. I envision vendor cartes along the corridor of the moviong sidewalks at the breaks anyway (as well as a small food court of some sort in the train station end). I hear the official announcement should be made soon pending the final agreements with the necessary entities. I too cannot wait to see this thing get started & built.
  18. big meeting regarding the intermodal yesterday - no details yet though...
  19. The private investment will come as soon as they announce ground breaking of the intermodal station. The station is what many will use to justify to the money lenders to back certain projects. I hear the car rental agencies is the last major hurdle in the project. Once they all agree on the details, we should hear something...
  20. progress, while still slow, is still being made on this. there are so many agencies and private industry entities that have to agree on thousands of details on everyhting from how to build it, with what, with who's money and who will maintain it, etc. I'm hopeful for some meaningful news within a month...
  21. Thanks CtownMikey. It's great to have such an active board except when someone new joins and has catch up with everything!
  22. having read through 100's of posts on these topics, I've lost track of what is the most current info. Is the "final" height of 110 confirmed???
  23. The quickest way to the casinos is 95S to N Stonington CT exit (2nd or 3rd exit into CT from RI). A bus from the airport is already running to Mohegan Sun, the rail service would simply tap a small proportion of the casino bound traffic that don;'t want to rent a car. A bus from New London station up to the casinos would be fine for the gambler looking to save on thier transportation costs to subsidize thier gamling budget. Gamblers also don;t have lots of baggage to tote around either, making the train/bud deal plausible in that respect. Since Groton has lost all meanigful air service, the entire New London/Groton/Navy base area relies on PVD for air travel since BDL is MUCH farther and less direct. The SLE extension to TFG would serve theis area well. Very few, but some local folks will consider using the SLE service (I must say IF it actually happens) to the casinos. Those that plan on having excessive adult beverages at the casinos could take advantage of not driving, as well as many of the folks connecting from the north on MBTA via Warwick station.
  24. any updates on 110? I've seen the rendering in the Sunday Journal. I think it's supposed to be 33 or 35 stories - not sure if there will be a spire to get us over 500ft though...
