I was at the West End Associating meeting tonight and had a chance to ask one of the city representatives after the meeting about the Grape. I was told the Grape was still trying to locate in Riverplace and is appealing the zoning (as reported in the Greenville Journal). But I have never been clear what the problem was. The explanation I was giving was that zoning was concerned that the Grape was misrepresenting it intended business (221 North across from the Hyatt was giving as an example of doing this, it was suppose to be a restaurant but is a late night dance club) and the Grape was trying to do the same thing. The representatives of the Grape assumed that zoning would not be a issue and did not represent themselves well. City council and the zoning board had no idea what kind of business the Grape was so denied them zoning. The city representative said that if the Grape's presentation would have been clearer and better the city and zoning would have had no problem with the zoning request . The city representative even said that the Grape is exactly the kind of business that the city wants for that location! How frustrating!

I was in Chicago last month and all the new downtown development are condo building. Urban lifestyle seem to be the new driving force for downtown development nationwide( as opposed to corporate towers).

The brick apartments at the back of the site are empty. Job trailer on site. Utility company was working in the street in front of the site today. (disconnecting gas??) Counted five constructions trucks on site today (for the first time). Not may days left till the apartments are up in smoke!

Thanks Greenvilleguy for the info. Do we know what the problem is with the grape being located in riverplace?It seem to me it would be great addition to downtown. Who do we need to contact to voice our opinion?

Some new info on the development Renaissance at the falls ( The big clearing above Cleveland park near the airplane). It has been renamed Ridgeland at the park[url=http://www.ridgelandatthepark.com/] and has a new site plan and floor plans and will have new elevations also. The building are not quite as close together as before and supposedly each building will have a different exterior. I was told that the design goal was to make the development appear to be a neighbourhood of large individual houses. Should be an improvement over the original plan.

Just as a note of interest the building that contains the subway and the baitshack on main street has sold according to the listing realtor.Now maybe some one will clean the Baitshack! (Home of the most graphic graffiti in town and the best oyster poboy)

If you turn beside the Army store on south main then turn on Boggs Street (the ally behind the Army story) The tomb stone will be on your right, after the new garage apartment that is being built (very easy to miss). The story I was told was their was a shop that carved tomb stones near this location and this was a tomb stone that was miss carved and was left behind after the shop closed. Then a latter owner of the property found the tomb stone and had it erected( for fun?) So as far as I know their is no human remains at the site- but who knows?? Too good to pass up for Halloween!

My understanding is the building was sold to a group of local owners who plan to renovate the second floor for offices and then renovate the upper floor to residences. I have no idea what their time frame is. My understanding also is that Tassly was sold to one of the bartenders and is independently owned by him. As far as I know their is no ties to the City tavern in Charlotte.
