Detroit and Dallas won last night. Not to read too much in to any of it, but Cinci's first stringers looked pretty good. The Lions starters looked just awful on both sides of the ball. No pressure on from the D-line, crappy coverage in the secondary, terrible pass protection on offense. Second-stringers looked a lot better though.

I agree. As big of a USC fan as I am, there will have to be a drop off at some point. But, I can't see them losing too much ground as long as Carroll is there. They will be a strong Top 25 team for at least the next two to three years if Carroll sticks around, probably longer. Right now, USC and Florida have the upper hand in recruiting, because they are hands-down the best teams in their respective states, and FL and CA are by far and away the two best states for recruiting top-notch athletes. Other upper-echelon schools have to work harder to get the kids who have been surrounded by USC or Florida for their entire lives. I read somewhere over the summer that USC spends most of its time recruiting within a hundred miles or so around LA, although a number of their current/recent stand-outs were from elsewhere (Booty, Jarrett, etc).

UNC did get a couple of pretty darn good recruits this past spring, so I would expect them to improve.

The big ten has a lot of work to do to fix their image after OSU got crushed by Florida and Michigan got crushed by USC. Both teams will definitely be very good, but they will have an uphill battle to reach near the top of the polls, because people (including myself) would expect them to lose the speedy SEC, or USC, or Texas, or many others. I can see Michigan running the table to the OSU game, but they could have more problems with Wisconsin since the defense will be lacking compared to last year's group. I would like to make a motion that we move this topic to the top with the other "sticky" sports topics. Seconded? Coaches Poll is out. No big surprises here: 1 USC 2 LSU 3 Florida 4 Texas 5 Michigan 6 West Virginia 7 Wisconsin 8 Oklahoma 9 Virginia Tech 10 Ohio State 11 Louisville 12 California 13 Georgia 14 Auburn 15 Tennessee 16 Rutgers 17 UCLA 18 Penn State 19 Nebraska 20 Arkansas 21 Florida State 22 TCU 23 Boise State 24 Hawaii 25 Texas A&M

Well the Lions signed #2 pick Calvin Johnson finally, so that's good. However, their 2nd round pick QB Drew Stanton has been placed on IR and is done for the season, with a knee problem that he also had in college. Nice draft pick, idiots. Jeez. Pre-season starts next weekend!

I saw this too. I am all about predictions and guessing, but it seemed a little over-the-top to have some bowl predictions out. What's next, preseason rankings for 2008? Michigan-Florida would make for an interesting Rose Bowl though.
  7. If that was directed at me, I am familiar with the rules, but I wrote "ketchup" because the first thing that came to mind was "The Ketchup Song" by Stompin' Tom Conners. telephone

Huh, I woulda put LSU ahead of WVU, if for no other reason than the fact that LSU plays in the SEC. Can't argue with #1 though!
  9. Maybe, instead of KIAS, the slogan for GR should be "Home of the Hallway of Awesome-ness"
  10. Oh no! This means we need deeper setbacks! Quick, amend the zoning ordinance! Safety first!

When do the "official" AP and USA Today preseason polls come out?

WVU's offense will be incredible. Texas will be very good this year. The QB Colt McCoy will be a sophmore and will know the offense that much better this year. I can only see this team improving in the next couple of years, as he gets older.

ND-Ga Tech should be interesting. A lot of people are saying that ND will have a relatively lousy year (6-6, 7-5), so we'll quickly whether or not that is the case. Last year when ND was supposed to be awesome, they just barely beat GT. USC will have a good test for their second game: on the road against the Cornhuskers.

Create your ultimate college football team! http://ultimateteam.rivals.com/UltimateFAQ.asp Anyone else read the column on SI.com about LSU and USC? I think fans of those teams would love for those two to meet for the title in 08. I know I would!

So John Kitna, the QB of the NFL's laughingstock, the Detroit Lions, says that they are going to win at least ten games this year. Sure, they have a good bunch of receivers, but last I checked, they had no offensive line, no defensive line, no secondary, and a so-so running back with a nasty leg injury. Does anyone think that a team that hasn't won more than six games since the Clinton Administration can suddenly win 10? I think they will be better, maybe (maybe!) winning seven, but not ten. Every year someone from Detroit says "this will be the year we get it together", only to start the season 2-9. I really like the new coach and his attitude, but I can't help but think "same old Lions..."
