  1. I like this location. This area of town could use some food that isn’t trendy and expensive. it should be very lively on Saturday mornings (like Moore Street but with patio seating ).
  2. Perhaps. Overseas travel should be mandatory for every American
  3. It’s a shame that this was voted down. The people in the area may not like it but that’s where the elected officials fail for not educating them. Instead of this nice, compact development there will be 290 individual lots cleared across that part of the county. If you want to keep your country green/pastoral you should support areas of dense development. It spares so much more wildness in the end. That’s how every city in pretty much every country that isn’t the US of A does it.
  4. Y’all are talking about “overpowering” the will of the majority of Richmonders. I was disappointed with both votes too but I do believe that the opinions of the people that actually live here trump the wishes of those who made their homes elsewhere. And their opinion is certainly more valid than people from the future. It’s a good thing that the people have a voice here. It is the city leaders that screwed the casino deal by making it look like a vote on an economic /incentives package instead of what it was, a simple yes or no if gambling should be legal here. Remind the public that Christian segregationists wrote the laws forbidding gambling and that the law is condescending and maybe progressives would have fallen in line. Instead nearly everyone that voted no thought that voting yes meant handing over hundreds of millions of dollars to an out of state operator.
  5. A few weeks ago I made a special trip across the Varina Enon bridge so that I could get a look at the construction. I was so sad to see only cleared land.
  6. The counties can change zoning in favor of high density and accept the fact that the concept of a single family home on a half acre lot is dated and untenable. The quick solution is to deforest Amelia, New Kent, Powhatan and Goochland. I personally hope that doesn’t happen. I’d rather Richmond, Henrico and Chesterfield achieve Hong Kong density before any more green space is sacrificed so that Ryan Homes can stay profitable. I imagine that the cities to our south have the same issues. They’ve been known for their sprawl for the last 30 years. Surely they are running out of lots that aren’t an hour away from the centers of their respective metros. Those cities have also embraced higher density development too , which is probably their biggest advantage.
  7. Glad to see something happening. I get why they are tucking the field into the south west corner but it kinda sucks. The article about the new bridge on Arther Ashe Blvd mentions that it needs to be built even taller. This ballpark will be mostly obscured by the bridge (behind a towering mound of dirt that extends farther north than the current berm) when it’s finished.
  8. There’s finally stuff to gaze upon there
  9. Organic growth is best, that’s why SA and Manchester are booming while City Center, the Diamond District, Green City etc are devoid of activity. That said, I do hate this as open space, even if it’s briefly. The side of the old Dominion building beside it looks unfinished now. I’m going to chain myself to the Monroe building when the state tries to demolish it. That will be the biggest blunder in Richmond history since massive resistance.
  10. The top seems to light up nicely* too. I’ll try to get a photo this weekend. *not super interesting but lit up which is unique for this part of town.
  11. The CoStar sites should do very well, seeing as how they will be opening around the same time as the amphitheater. It will be a great area for pre-gaming and dining before concerts.
  12. There really isn’t any space to add any bars and restaurants and IMO it isn’t necessary to do so. The Slip and Bottom are long established places for that kind of activity and it wouldn’t be prudent to cannibalize those places to prop up a new destination for tourists. It isn’t SA and was never going to be simply because of where the canal is located. There just isn’t enough developable land along it. It’s a linear park used by locals to get to and from adjacent parks. Pretty much every weekend between mid April and early November there is an event on Browns Island. Those events come with food and adult beverage sales. And yes, that bank rendering was nice…but completely obsolete just 5 years later. The other bank mid and high rises across the metro (and commonwealth and the country) largely sit empty. The building there now probably came with more housing /people anyway. The renderings of CoStar show a cluster of restaurants, so there will be a few more options in a few years.
  13. To Imiss…the Canal Walk gets a whole lot of use in the early evening. Saturday and Sundays too. Richmond isn’t the kind of tourist town that will have occupied parks during typical business hours. It doesn’t get busy until the people that live near it get home from work or have the day off (weekends).
  14. That crumbling parking garage is in the exact same condition that it was on Fed 1st 2023. I’m so anxious to see something happen here.
  15. The DC area is compelling for far more than its airports and sports franchises. The schools are phenomenal (K-12 and universities). The cultural institutions are among the best in the county (Green City isn’t going to compete with the Kennedy Center. The VMFA is fabulous but it’s no National Gallery). Access to capital and influence cannot be matched anywhere outside of Manhattan. The shopping is leaps and bounds above what Richmond offers. The food is better. It’s a truly international region and not just home to a bunch of immigrants. It’s home to foreign dignitaries, king makers. Ones children would potentially have access to the most tony internships. Your children and spouses can peruse media and technology careers etc. There’s a reason that it’s the wealthiest metro in the country. We are lucky to receive any scraps that CoStar will send our way but no one should hold their breath waiting for an established and large business there to uproot and head to Richmond.
  16. I don’t think this will fail. There are thousands of active 20 and 30 something’s in a mile radius of this places. There is very little in the way of recreational infrastructure (aside from river activities ) in the same area (where is the closest place to play any racket sports? Battery Park, Randolph?). There is pent up demand. It will work and be sustainable with just the nearby residents (so won’t get into “but where will we park” nonsense).
  17. There’s usually one of those every other weekend. Most likely a generator or HVAC unit was replaced.
  18. Y’all grew up going to fancy dentist offices lol. I tell everyone how nice the facilities are there. I’ve had mostly positive treatment there too. It’s about as pleasant as a trip the dentist can be. I also like the energy (fast paced, lots of students and patients). Godspeed on a new building though. They provide a great service to the community. Give them everything they want!
  19. I don’t mind tipping. It has been a part of the American experience for my whole life (dating back to tip jars on counters that I largely ignored). The service (what little there was) was good. I had become friendly with the guy that made my food and I could look around and see that he probably wasn’t going to make much in tips with such low traffic
  20. Yeah. That is with tip (slow to respond because you made me question my entire existence lol, decided to order again in person before responding). I just ordered what is probably my last one (they are quite good). The base is $12. I added feta for $1. With tax and 18% tip it was $17.74. Funny stuff, I looked up their Carytown menu and the gyro here at Hatch is $1 more than at their sit down place on Cary.
  21. I often travel with family members that live on the Peninsula. We usually check both airports because either way someone is driving an hour. 90% of the time RIC comes out on top (we’re mostly flying to the Midwest , Colorado and the North East/New England). I will be pitching a trip (with friends and family) to PR now that there is a direct flight. So while not a win for RIC, it’s a win for Richmonders This whole piece is mine and I’m going to use every part of Virginia. If it’s on or near 95 or 64 it feels like home
  22. That’s very interesting. Driving through one wouldn’t suspect the area is on the verge of massive growth. I’m not generally a fan of exurban growth but it is exciting to learn that even that side of the metro is booming. It’s a great sign.
  23. So y’all expect RIC to provide flights to every destination in the world? That’s just silly. Gonna be mad because another airport in the commonwealth has a flight that Richmond doesn’t (as if Richmond doesn’t already offer routes that Norfolk doesn’t)? Lame. I’ve had nothing but positive experiences flying out of Norfolk and will happily do it again (Dulles too, in March in fact when I fly to Montreal). It’s just stupid to believe that Norfolk languishing would somehow be good for Richmond. I’m going to always root for Richmond, but I’m never going to root against HR. We can both have nice things. And of course I’d rather RIC have the flight to San Juan. That’s a good one! But I’m not taking it as a loss for RIC. There aren’t 200 gates at RIC so options will be limited.
  24. San Juan is a great addition. I may have a reason to fly out of Norfolk now! Not to get off topic but Norfolk has a very pleasant and attractive airport. I welcome all good news for all of Virginia.
