The larger half closer to downtown is the new main MNPD headquarters. The smaller half which is still quite large is going to be Metro's new Family Safety Center, renamed from Family Justice Center. Once opened it will be one of the largest, if not the largest, facilities of its kind. Designed to be a one stop shop, so to speak, for social services. Easier on the people in need and intended to foster collaboration among agencies and local non-profits. I know I will leave some out but there will be the Office of Family Safety, and then satellite locations for the DA's office, police counselors (free), DCS and the like.

You would think with all the NIMBYs over in Green Hills they would have lobbied for something more aesthetically pleasing. The most frustrating part is that for not a huge investment they could have done something really cool to the exterior shell (and I guess they still could some day). I mean it is pretty much a blank canvas. And those stupid stripes of brick at the bottom - it looks like a sample/demo mock up. I know design nowadays is dictated by budget but I want to shake the architects who come up with this garbage. Thanks for indulging my rant.

Such a great building! Glad it's being preserved.

I think so. Surely if they went to the expense of installing a railing on the upper mechanical(?) roof (the height of which is only a story or so) they will install one to protect folks from falling off a 30-story tower. Not to mention the purely aesthetic function of obscuring those god awful HVAC units.

I've always admired this little building. I guess I better go pay my respects. However, eight stories is likely to seem rather imposing from Lafayette.

Oh man! I sure wish we had those instead of a garage. In related news: Dillard's new GIANT STUCCO BOX is a real disappointment.

I think we're talking about the same thing. Those little black units will soon be covered by a railing system. The same railing system that is already installed and can be seen in the above photo on the upper portion/tier of the roof.

Looks like the railing system has been installed on the upper portion. eh. It's certainly better than nothing.

I asked the leasing agents about the visible HVAC units and they told me there will eventually be a railing system installed that's "designed to obscure" them.

H.G. Hill does some great work. I really appreciate what appears to be a commitment to a certain level of quality we don't see too often today. I'm excited to see this one complete.

Furthermore, I wish they'd allow tall buildings close to Broadway. I'm of the opinion that an adjacent structure does nothing to take away from the historic quality of its neighbor. The Hyatt Regency proposal (Sweldering sp) comes to mind. Juxtaposition elevates both the old and new. As much as this liberal loves a government regulation I get so frustrated with historical commissions and the like.
