  1. Once again, I hate to burst your bubble, but the current Greensboro depot is a copy of and is predated by the Union Station in Winston-Salem, which was begun in 1924. The New York architects Fellheimer & Wagner designed Union Station in 1924, then copied its own design with a slightly wider facade in 1926 for Greensboro. Union Station has recently been immaculately restored to its original appearance after years of use and amazing unchanged condition as an auto garage.
  2. Another point proven....you rattle on....
  3. Thank you. You just verified my point with your last statement. Everyone one here can read between all your posts.
  4. Grow up, and don’t get your feelings hurt so easily. I’m sure you Greensboro people give up about as much recognition to Winston-Salem and it’s people as you get back. There is nothing wrong with criticism. You seem to be on here so much that you feel the amazing necessity to respond to every quibble, when everyone else has way more to do in their lives than sit on an anonymous forum and spar with anonymous experts. I mean really....look at the numbers, 7713 posts.....is this really what you live for??
  5. Don’t mistake “envy” with outright apathy or for the fact that most people might not care for what’s going in your town like you do. I happen to live in Charlotte, and it has left every other city between Atlanta and and New York with skid marks in the dust when it comes to “towers” and impressive development.
  6. Your excitement and enthusiasm for what’s going on there is palatable and understandable, since you live there and post here and on other sites nonstop. But some of us have seen and are exposed to developments that are much more interesting and stimulating to the common eye. This design does very little to show any real design skill. And I dare say anyone in Winston-Salem is envious. After all, that city has the best and most comprehensive examples of architecture in the state! How do you contend with two works by Ceasr Pelli, the forerunner of the Empire State Building by the same architects, a Robert A M Stern, a Robert Venturi, a church by Ralph Adams Cram, and numerous works by Charles Barton Keen? I’m sure there are many more... Not to mention all the authentic architecture of Old Salem.
  7. Looks bland and unthoughtful. Greensboro’s idea of architecture is certainly not setting any bar....from mediocre to worse.
  8. The finished bricked elevator shaft on the south elevation looks to be a nice transition of the lighter brick and terra-cotta Art Deco ornamentation of the Hotel Indigo, to the yet to be constructed Hyatt Place and Piedmont Federal headquarters. The only glitch has been the resulting red earth pool created by the recent deluge of snow and rain in the pit made between the building and Merschel Plaza for the underground parking deck.
  9. Thanks for this update. It’s not surprising to see Winston-Salem get this federal money for such a project. After all, federal money paid for over half the $1B + initial Lynx Line along South blvd in Charlotte. However, the description of this north-south line from Wake Forest Reynolda campus/coliseum area to Smith Reynolds Airport then south along Liberty Street to downtown is totally different from the proposed line from the Thruway/Medical Center thru West End to downtown then to WSSU, is it not?
  10. Thank you. This city kid person is wasting valuable time pushing a pipe dream and trying to endlessly justify why something is doable. His time would be better spent picking up road litter, or helping to solve the terrible crime that exist in Greensboro.
  11. Bottom line, downtown Greensboro is just far removed from view, the highway that is, and doesn’t have it....as in core means or demand for anything approaching 500+. This is a head-in-the-clouds notion. Don’t expect anything half as tall, anytime soon or in the near future. Greensboro just doesn’t measure up.
  12. Don’t expect any 500+ft dreams to break the modest skyline of Greensboro anytime soon!, whether it’s sitting on a deck or no deck.
  13. Great photos of Pilot Mtn and Winston-Salem KJH
  14. Flow Automotive Companies owner Don Flow is purchasing the 18-story GMAC tower and teaming with Charlotte-based Grubb Properties to redevelop the tower and build a new $48M mixed use residential, office, and retail complex facing Fourth Street in the center city. He will remove all his corporate services to the downtown Winston-Salem location from sites across North Carolina and Virginia. This is Grubbs third project in Winston-Salem. http://www.journalnow.com/news/local/redevelopment-of-gmac-building-in-downtown-winston-salem-announced/article_c1376dec-858f-5a0f-922d-a0df1cb7f78f.html
  15. The location is not yet determined, but Winston-Salem is to be the new headquarters for the National Sports Media Association. http://www.journalnow.com/business/business_news/local/national-sports-media-association-moving-to-winston-salem/article_6ea0756c-0b0b-5e0c-9419-322351373528.html
  16. Winston-Salem and the Wake Forest Innovation Quarter is the cover story of the February issue of Business North Carolina magazine. http://businessnc.com/remaking-winston-salem/ The work to date...over $700M in investment, repurposing of nearly 3 million square feet of dead unused factory and office space, and new infrastructure including streets and parks has been transformative for the east end of downtown. The next phases will incorporate all new construction.
  17. Thank you for the links zalo. Interesting reads!!
  18. I will be interested to see if the developers get the city rolling on the underground parking aspect of this block and the planned city green area that will be above the underground parking. It would also be nice for something other than surface lot parking to be on the site where Piedmont Federal planned years ago to build. These developers, out of Cumming GA, are serious in the world of investment and development. Apparently they have done work in Georgia (Atlanta & Buford), North Carolina (south Charlotte), and Portugal of all places.
  19. s for Orlando. Thank you Kimpton Cardinal Winston-Salem. (photo from Instagram)
  20. Looks like Wexford Science & Technology has purchased outright and is ready to roll with the Bailey Power Plant project: http://www.newschannel10.com/story/31586479/wake-forest-innovation-quarter-announces-the-first-stage-of-redevelopment-of-the-bailey-power-plant

  22. There are more attractive buildings at the airport that look better than that thing. How many million??? Of course Greensboro's architecture downtown is a little sub-rate with all the glass boxes here and there.
