Travel observations and new developments of other cities and countries
VSRJ replied to markhollin's topic in Nashville
Agreed. My two best friends moved there a couple of years ago so I've had the chance to visit several times. I'd probably move there if the right opportunity presented itself. It is a beautiful city. -
Also, Blue Oval City will no doubt have a big impact on numbers once it's up and running.

I agree. Nothing against the travel photos, but I mainly come to this thread for a high-level look at noteworthy developments in other cities. -
And it drags on... Tom Intrator seeks extension on multiple developments, including $1.1B Pinch District project https://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/news/2023/05/03/tom-intrator-seeks-extension-multiple-developments.html Excited to see this one moving forward! I'm always surprised that, for its size, Phoenix doesn't have a more impressive skyline. The city's tallest is only 483 feet and was built in 1972. There are a lot of towers under construction (according to Wikipedia), but all are under 400 feet. -
I went to the new Bog & Barley (from the Celtic Crossing crew) at the Regalia shopping center in East Memphis over the weekend. It was one of the best meals I've had at a Memphis restaurant in recent memory. The decor, food, service, everything was impeccable. Highly recommend! Over 400 pieces of wood were imported from Ireland for the bar alone.

It really is amazing to see how this area has transformed into such a vibrant part of the city in just the last 10 years — and it doesn't seem to be slowing down! EDGE awards LPI, Grubb incentives for $68M phase 2 of Broad Ave. mixed-use development https://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/news/2023/04/21/edge-link-apartments-broad-phase-2-lpi-grubb.html

Please don't tell me that's the finished product. This whole recladding is a mess. I would have rather them just reinstall brick.

Inside 440 - Berry Hill, Midtown, Vanderbilt, 12S, WeHo, Fairgrounds, etc.

Ah, yes. There were even "keep 8th 4 lanes" billboards. -
Looks like a nice, much-needed upgrade: Landers Center expansion receives $38.5M bond approval from DeSoto County Board of Supervisors https://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/news/2023/04/07/landers-center-expansion-bond-approval.html

That’s really interesting! I’m sure there will be much more about the building’s history uncovered once work begins.
-
Wow! I'm glad this news was released yesterday and not today because I think I would have been sure it was an April Fools' Day joke. But I've always said, if there's a city that can make a project like this happen, it's Memphis.

The riverfront deserves better than ok.

Below are a few of the renderings. Overall, I'm not sold on the design. There is so much brown concrete along the river today (Mud Island, parking garages, etc.), I really would have liked something with more glass, although I understand the limitations with it being a museum. I do really like the rooftop. Maybe it will look better once completed — and it will absolutely be a vast improvement over what's there now — but I guess I was hoping for more from this architect.

^ That's great news as hotel options in the University District are limited aside from the Holiday Inn at the UofM.

A few from the top of the Grand Hyatt this weekend (we definitely got lost trying to find a way over the tracks from Capitol View…it should not be as difficult as it is). -
Agreed. It’s especially frustrating that he’s a local developer. He knows how big this development would be for the city.

It will be interesting to see what this looks like density-wise. I'm a little concerned by the inclusion of a (likely suburban-esque) Whataburger and townhomes... EP3's plans for mixed-use development on Union include Whataburger, hotel, townhomes https://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/news/2023/02/10/ep3-union-station-whataburger-hotel-townhomes.html

I know nothing about football. How does this make Fred Smith a smart man? It seems like these leagues always fizzle. Hopefully someone can provide some perspective!

Are there any Wikipedia users who can update the Memphis tallest buildings page? @smeagolsfree do you know who updates Nashville's? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tallest_buildings_in_Memphis I suppose Grand Hyatt needs to be removed as well.
