Construction has officially begun — the anticipated opening is late 2023: https://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/news/2022/12/15/topgolf-begins-construction-on-memphis-location.html

Just kicking the can down the road at this point...so frustrating. The Walk on Union delayed again, gets 18-month extension to secure financing https://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/news/2022/12/13/the-walk-on-union-ccrfc-extension-financing-pilot.html

I definitely think there is some schmoozing that goes into some of these lists, but it's hard to deny that Memphis is an amazing place to visit.

I'm sure you (and people like you) said the same thing about Crosstown, the Pyramid, the Tennessee Brewery and a myriad of other adaptive reuse projects that have been successfully completed in Memphis in recent years. Sterick might be more complex, but if there is a will, there is a way — especially in Memphis. Your relentless pessimism and soul-draining contributions to this forum are truly mind-boggling.

Memphis' tree canopy will always be one of my favorite things about the city (and one of the things I miss most living in Nashville).

Project Thread/New Construction/Photo du jour/Const. CAMs
VSRJ replied to smeagolsfree's topic in Nashville
I moved here in 2015 and would often go to Rose Park for a view similar to this. I remember being in awe of how big the skyline seemed (compared to Memphis where I moved from). In retrospect, it seems so small and almost barren. -
No response from you-know-who. The silence is deafening.

I admittedly know nothing about how this process works — where does Hyatt fit into any of this? How involved (if at all) are they at this stage of development?
-
LOL that was my first thought.
-
So when site prep inevitably stops (if it hasn't already)...is it just going to be a giant hole in the ground? What an eyesore. Could another developer swoop in and save the project?
-
I’m starting to think this site might just be cursed. Anyone remember the Landry’s that once stood there (before it was converted into a Joe’s Crab Shack)? Let’s just bring that back.
-
Maybe they have to get the site to a certain stage for safety reasons?

Memphis excels at adaptive reuse (Crosstown) and smaller-scale developments (everything Downtown in the last 10 years). Large-scale projects like this are what's most challenging — and the most pricey.

That's exactly what I thought about after I posted that reply. But it was a bit of a special circumstance given the Great Recession. But yet, still a possibility in any economic environment.
-
If this is indeed a publicity stunt, I worry it might deter developers who are already hesitant to enter the market. Is this what they can expect?
-
I suppose this could just be a PR move to light a fire under the City's butt? How far along was site prep? I haven't been down there in several weeks.

I hate to be a pessimist (especially since there is so much pessimism in Memphis), but this is why I don't get excited about projects until they are well off the ground. We've been burned too many times. I love Memphis. But from a development/progress perspective, it can be so frustrating and bleak.

This article details the specifics of MEM's Master Plan. A few highlights of the landside components: Phase 1 (5-10 years out) Demolish A and C concourses Build new rental car center at former Concourse A and convert former Concourse C to surface parking lot Convert three other areas around the garages to surface lots to divert employee and public parking during construction and handle future overflow Phase 2 (10-20 years out) “Re-life” or replace short-term parking garage Build new parking garage on site of Concourse C Reserve land adjacent to new garage for possible hotel development I do wonder if they will regret demolishing A and C concourses should traffic increase significantly in the next 20 years. Hopefully they'll reserve space for concourse additions/expansions should the need arise.

I like the design, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Has construction started on any of Intrator's proposed projects? We don't need another developer dangling a carrot in front of us.

I love Memphis so much, but the speed in which developments move forward is so painfully slow. I hope it changes someday.

Great-looking mixed-use development for Millington! Astoria Square $150M mixed-use project set to get underway in Millington https://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/news/2022/10/26/astoria-square-mixed-use-project-in-millington.html
