  1. http://www.viewitdoit.com/images/virtual_tours/waterside_vt_01/index.html City of Norfolk just posted a 360 virtual tour of the construction process inside Waterside, and also mentioned that it is slated to open Sprin 2017.
  2. That's a great point, and one of many reasons why I overwhelmingly support LRT over BRT. My guess is that either the BRT dedicated lane would require either a reduction in lanes on the existing roads, or a road expansion (which as we have seen in the case of Kempsville Road, can be as hotly contested as light rail ). When people think BRT, they immediately think cheaper, but there are always hidden costs that will come up with any form of transportation (roads, rail, buses, etc.).
  3. While I agree that LRT has a more profound economic impact than BRT, BRT buses travel in their own dedicated (often separated via a median) travel lanes, and have onboard sensors that communicate with traffic signals to minimize the time spent stopped at traffic lights.
  4. While Wegmans and Fresh Market are both grocers and would compete in some areas, this has not prevented Fresh Market and Whole Foods (and Trader Joes) from operating and being successful at Hilltop. Wegmans stores are usually enormous too and much larger than a Fresh Market footprint. The prepared foods that Wegmans has is unbeatable.
  5. No worries, I've probably been spending too much time on Reddit, so I feel like I'm always in defensive mode when it comes to responses now haha
  6. This is just not true. Even huge cities like Chicago limit the hours that establishments can serve alcohol, but there are still plenty of restaurants by the bars where the bargoers head to after they're done partying for the night. I am sure the City could lobby the ABC to allow them to give out a very limited number of 4:00 AM liquor licenses to some bars, but I don't think that's what the City or many of its residents want at this point in time.
  7. Thanks for the link vdogg. Just made a comment myself!
  8. Ugh sounds like the typical Boomer-Millennial disconnect she and every other Boomer is guilty of. We as Millennials are lazy and entitled and the Boomers know us better, and once we "grow up," we'll continue the trend of moving to the suburbs because it's what we're supposed to do. If she wanted to build a stronger argument, she would present concrete evidence of Millennials actually doing that, but there are hard facts out there that show families and households are forming later on life, and that Millennials are slower to move out to the burbs (and when they do, they still want a walkable urban-ish center that can serve as a commercial hub or have access to commuter rail stations). Maybe Kerry would benefit from actually talking to some of us Millennials that she is so quick to dismiss...
  9. Delta announced two new routes from ORF. One is resuming a nonstop flight to JFK, while the other is the introduction of a seasonal route to Minneapolis. http://pilotonline.com/news/local/transportation/delta-adds-new-flights-out-of-norfolk-international-airport/article_74d80793-31bb-5c8f-83f9-2f6b87521263.html
  10. Southwest is adding two new nonstops from Norfolk, including one that will make it Norfolk's farthest west destination: Denver http://www.pilotonline.com/news/local/transportation/southwest-airlines-adds-two-new-direct-flights-from-norfolk/article_924be503-f280-598b-854d-bd40489c105a.html
  11. No they are saving the historic beach club, unless their latest plans changed their position on that.
  12. Nordstrom Rack is coming?! To Hell with Sears, I'll take Nordstrom Rack any day of the week!
  13. So you wouldn't want an NBA D-League team if they wanted to expand or relocate to Norfolk?
  14. I would be just as, if not more (probably more) upset if the Tides got bumped down to double-A.
  15. I'm really pissed at Ken Young for this. If he were truly committed to sports in the region he would not have sold no matter the pressure from the Ducks organization. Any franchise less than AHL is a major loss for the region. I get Anaheim would have had their way one way or another, but it just stinks that it doesn't even look like Ken put up a fight to try and keep the Admirals here. This is such a dumb reason to move the team on Anaheim's part. The team was very successful and had pretty good attendance for a minor league hockey team.
  16. I agree with you to an extent. I don't see any reason to detest the place, but at the same time it is nothing to write home about. The place is mostly dead when there isn't a conference there. The development has, however, generated a significant amount of tourists driving to PG County and has led to development adjacent to the site (see Tanger outlets and the MGM Casino under construction).
  17. Even out in Suffolk, I would never consider $1 per square foot to be steep. That's actually the cheapest I've ever seen a new construction apartment rent its units for.
  18. Gateway Bank was bought out a while back so I'm gonna go with no on that one.
  19. Source? I don't see that fitting in with any target market looking to visit Virginia Beach. Looks like this is just a bid. It looks awesome, but realistically, I don't think it would be accepted. For one, it does not integrate the existing beach club that Bruce said he would save.
  20. What?! Absolutely not. I hate when people try to play that card, it's an absolutely invalid argument used to guilt people into agreeing with the position in favor light rail. I mean, the buses run from Norfolk to Virginia Beach and you don't see people up in arms about discontinuing bus service. This is not anything like the water wars of the 1950s and 60s, and most of our city leaders are in favor of maglev not because it will help disconnect the region (I mean, come on), but because it's pitched as being cheaper, aka better for them politically if they try to sell themselves as being fiscally conservative with public money. This doesn't have anything to do with the City's leadership trying to exclude "Norfolk trash."
  21. I get that, I just didn't understand Norva757's comment specifically. It's out of place and I thought he was talking about the stadium being built vertically...
  22. I honestly think that Council is still in the honeymoon phase after being wooed by Maglev on their field trip to Atlanta. I wouldn't read too much into this and think that Maglev will be "just another alternative" in a couple of months. I honestly think that Council will end up extending light rail to the Beach and then also have a couple of lines in addition to that jetting out from Town Center.
  23. But it is very accessible by plane, especially with Mayor Sessoms considering offering incentives for airlines to have more direct flights out of ORF. I would not consider Greensboro very accessible for an ACC team like Florida State or Syracuse even though it's on I-85. I agree with the second half of your post, but I honestly do not think the Admirals would want to move out of Norfolk. There would really need to be an excellent deal on rent to get them out of Scope. I could very well be wrong though.
