  1. You don't have to buy it. She has been on this casino stuff for decades. She is one of the most senior and powerful Senators in Virginia. No casino bill is passing without "her casino." Northam ain't crossing her over this, especially considering his past racial problems.
  2. The only casino in Hampton Roads will be in Portsmouth because of Louise Lucas...you can bet on that. The tribe is smartly moving in another direction.
  3. One casino in the Hampton Roads region is the only economically viable possibly. I see a casino in Portsmouth due to Louise Lucas happening faster than any Native American options.
  4. Good. That place was in bad shape relatively speaking. The Marriott needs to be renovated ASAP too.
  5. Most conference tournaments are like this......scrub teams usually don't draw early,,,,I expect it to really pick up on Thursday
  6. I dunno what people were expecting, if you have been inside Scope before, you realize its pretty much impossible to add more seats/luxury boxes. So the city has gone about renovating Scope at the vision of being attractive to mid-sized events/concerts like the MEAC, the high school basketball tournaments, ect. I really don't see a problem with it. If this area is to get a big time arena, Virginia Beach is going to half to build it.
  7. None to my knowledge. This whole situation is a joke. Food trucks draw people out of their office who normally wouldn't leave for lunch. It complements traditional restaurants by increasing foot traffic. It's Norfolk, so I'm not surprised something progressive or outside the box is being shot down.
  8. Nobody takes Dougherty seriously, she writes at a high school level, and hardly offers anything insightful or thought provoking. I wouldn't be surprised if she writes most of columns wine drunk. Like Sessoms said, its a 50/50 shot this gets done, and I hope it falls through. This area desperately needs a game changer IMHO.
  9. This area needs a new arena, this region misses out on numerous major concerts, sports tournaments, and other events because The Scope is a dump. I'm not even worried about attracting a pro team at the moment. I think out of the top 50 metros in this country, Hampton Roads may have the worst arena situation, next to Richmond.
  10. In this market, a new arena would cost more towards 200 million dollars not 250, for example the new Phoenix hockey arena, and companies are cutting back on things like naming rights, 8.7 million ain't happening, but I could see somewhere around 2 million a year. I don't know what city is going to do it, but I see an arena happening in the near future.
  11. Screw chains, support your local restaurants and businesses. I will also personally vouch for Taphouse, Big Easy, and A.W Shucks, which I think has some of the best sea food and oysters in area.
  12. That picture is older than 1992. No Marriott, Norfolk Southern Building, or Town Point Center. My guess is around 1986.
  13. Great pictures Telmnstr. The TCC building looks quite massive, I'm going to have to check it out when I get back.
  14. I just want to give a kudos to Tides management, especially in regards to maintenance of Harbor Park, always clean and nobody would of ever thought it is well over a 15 years old.
  15. Man, an upscale "urban" establishment that keeps out the Vicks and Iversons of the world, Hampton Roads hasn't had too many of these types of establishments before, I might have to check this place out when I get home from school.
  16. Glad to see they are still moving ahead despite the economy. These project will provide much needed middle class/moderate level housing in downtown, and it will also do wonders in increasing foot traffic after the 9-5 rush.
  17. Arena built in between metros(Old Cleveland Coliseum) or the burbs(USAir Arena(DC), don't and haven't work. The new arena is going to have to be in a city center near public transportation.
  18. As the saying goes, if they build it, they will come. Honestly, it is quite amazing in the entire state of Virginia, there isn't a modern pro style 18k-20k arena. There is going to be a real interesting race to build a "real" arena between Norfolk and Virginia Beach, heck, you can even add Richmond, because they won't be keeping the CAA tournament for long in that dump they call the Coliseum. I would have to guess Virginia Beach is the best position to do it with a Town Center location combined with light rail, especially considering who is mayor now. I just think Norfolk may have too much on its plate the next 5-10 years.(i.e. removal of projects, new court house, light rail overruns, ect.)
  19. I don't care who does it, but this region needs a new arena. The Scope and Spaceship are utter embarrassments for a region of our size. I'm not even harping on the issue due to pro sports, we also miss out on concerts, NCAA events, and other potential events.
  20. Cruzer's is a pretty good hole in the wall, only bad thing is they don't serve the hard stuff. Agree the opinions about Tortilla West, good food and beer.
  21. Exactly, that's why many malls ban teenagers after a certain time unless they are with a parent.
  22. Go there on a Friday or Saturday late afternoon or night, it's getting pretty bad.
  23. Drive 40 minutes up the road to Bad Newz, you can fry directly to Boston on Airtran for same price. Done it before, very quick and easy. Odd decision by Southwest.
  24. The Boones have been a shady operation for years. Not surprised one of them would pull a stunt like this. They probably are really short on cash due to the real estate crash. I find it kinda funny when Norfolk's power players fight another in public.
  25. They are moving the heavy rail tracks to the median to 664.
