  1. Essentially, they're just paying their players who aren't in college. In the past, they 'signed' pro players, but didn't pay them. Lower division soccer in the USA is complicated. It's a mix of amateur clubs, pro clubs, and minor-league feeder teams to MLS clubs.
  2. That would be the DEMOLISHED American Cigar Factory building. Too little, too late.
  3. Muddy Paws has already expanded. There's a fenced-in doggy playground behind the store on what used to be gas station property. And they've added another store entrance facing the station property. Muddy Paws has also been repairing the lights in the old gas station canopy. Maybe they are planning to add more evening hours.
  4. That means two departures 6:15 and 9 am Mon through Fri, and two arrivals: 7 pm (90 minutes earlier than now) and 10:30 pm. Also, there's a new 11:40 pm arrival time on Saturday nights. Here's a slideshow that explains it in easy to understand form. http://drpt.virginia.gov/media/2687/hr-optimization-1102019-w-weekends.pdf
  5. There was supposed to be a shopping center in Lambert's Point, next to the railroad tracks, but that seems to have just stopped cold.
  6. The Pamunkey casino doesn't need General Assembly approval. It will get built. The GA approval means that it will get built faster, and with more games. And two casinos in Hampton Roads would be a good thing. One lone casino means a "take it or leave it" experience. Two or more means competition for customers' dollars. And personally, i look forward to the ferry from casino to casino. That will be a fun ride.
  7. Where would this go? The site of the old school? 38th Street doesn't exactly have a lot of open lots.
  8. Biloxi, Mississippi has EIGHT casinos. And that doesn't count the casinos in New Orleans and the other cities on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. If anything, competition has made for a better experience for casino visitors. More freebies, more discounts, free events for the whole family. I lost track of all the discounted buffets and lunch specials that i went to when i was stationed in Gulfport. One casino means a "take it or leave it" experience.
  9. The Portsmouth casino needs General Assembly approval. The Pamunkey casino does not.
  10. Blink and you missed it! A company placed a couple of dozen electric scooters in the city last night. However, nobody in the city government knew anything about it! A company called Bird Electric Scooters is trying to rent electric scooters via an app (the same way the Pace bicycles are rented). By the afternoon, the scooters were being impounded by the city. https://pilotonline.com/news/local/transportation/article_4f1fe5f8-ab90-11e8-935f-5bbeed67b7a1.html
  11. Still owned by the Army, i believe.
  12. The City of Norfolk is hoping to get someone to take over the empty spots on Granby Street across from the Main. https://pilotonline.com/business/real-estate/article_2c3d1de4-a4c9-11e8-a76f-ffb508bc0be2.html Personally, i don't think they are going to get many (if any) takers. The storefronts are under a parking garage and are set WAY far back, so much so that you don't even notice it from the road. Did anyone actually walk next to the storefronts, except when it was raining? Did anyone actually notice, or shop at, the stationery store that was there?
  13. FYI, the CIAA tournament is held a week before the MEAC, so there's no overlap. The CIAA ended on March 3rd this year, and the MEAC started up on March 5th.
  14. Looks like we will have a locally owned restaurant in the fire department building on West Little Creek Road. The city has sold the building to the owner of the Ocean View restaurant Razzo. https://wtkr.com/2018/06/26/city-council-votes-to-sell-norfolk-fire-station-to-italian-restaurant/
  15. Here's an update about the mall expansion/condos/motel/"public space" being planned for the 3rd anchor spot in MacArthur Mall. https://pilotonline.com/business/consumer/article_3a00ddfe-7647-11e8-a4cb-475bc36a5132.html By the way I couldn't find a dedicated thread for MacArthur Mall. Feel free to move this if there is a more relevant thread.
  16. Hoping this will post here, but look at what happened to the NEON District today! By the way, this sign WILL stay up after the Greyhound building gets torn down and is replaced by the TCC classrooms!
  17. From the Pilot, Chesapeake is buying up some abandoned railroad right of way to make a trail which will, hopefully, be a part of a trail that reaches from the Virginia Beach Oceanfront to downtown Suffolk. https://pilotonline.com/life/fitness/article_b909af30-578f-11e8-b61f-8326f2d3a43f.html
  18. It doesn't need to pass the General Assembly. The Pamunkey Tribe can make their own casino on their own land tomorrow if they wish. However, with sports gambling now suddenly legal thanks to the Supreme Court, I would expect slot machines and sports gambling to be approved by the General Assembly for the Pamunkey casino and for Colonial Downs and for the Off-Track-Betting parlors. The General Assembly will see the dollars float away to Maryland and West Virginia if they don't.
  19. Could be. Looking at their website, they go up and down the East Coast from NYC to Florida with a gap between Baltimore and Charlotte.
  20. C-USA and the Sun Belt should swap members. Between the two conferences, the Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana schools in one conference. The east coast states, Alabama, and Kentucky schools in the other. C-USA is not earning enough revenue for all the travel the Monarchs have to endure. Best to go regional, and maybe actually get some close rivalries.
  21. The Feds won't allow a pedestrian bridge that close to the Federal Building, due to security issues. Brambleton is just going to be a bigger, deadlier game of Frogger.
  22. It's only going to be two stories, (i presume with parking) on that tiny lot? And students will have to cross the street from Hell, to get to any other campus buildings, or well, anything else. That's not exactly a step up from the Portsmouth campus, which was a pretty impressive three story building in the heart of downtown Portsmouth. Although it sounds like they will be tearing down the bus station, i was hoping they wouldn't. That is a nice historic building that just needed a facelift.
  23. Mixed income housing would be ideal. Unfortunately, you'd have to appease the NIMBYs who would start screaming about their property values.
  24. How about another brewery? Elation Brewing Co. will be in the Park Place area of Colley Avenue (that area the hipsters call NoCo). It's the building across the street from University Pizza and Chow that was a storefront church for many years. There are signs up stating that there will be a brewery and a yoga studio(!) in the building, with an email address for neighbors who have questions or concerns. No web presence yet.
  25. One thing i keep telling people that think that the light rail has to stop at the gates is light rail can go through the base. HRT buses go onto the base every day. The bus stops, a gate guard comes on the bus and checks everyone's ID cards. If you don't have a proper ID, they politely escort you off the bus, and point you to the pass office. No reason that they can't do the same thing for light rail trains. Light rail can go down Hampton Blvd, enter the base, and head over to the piers and other populated areas of the base.
