  1. I agree. Especially on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, nobody would go that way. You can't impose tolls this high on the only way of moving in and out of the region by land. There needs to be alternate (RAIL) ways of moving in and out of the region in place before tolls upward of $3 can be put in place.

The problem is with this sorry state......they take alot from us and give very little back to us. They need to stop treating us a like a red headed step child and keep their hands out of our cookie jar without replacing some of them cookies!

  2. I can tell the budget was low....I didn't mean to sound like towards your work...especially since you guys did it on your own dime...I know I couldn't have done half as good so maybe I should have kept that comment to myself! I use to love the wire

As in cheap? Or as in soap opera cheesy? LOL

If the former, then yeah, that was something I would've loved to change, as we were out of pocket. As for picture quality, for some reason, it only looks like that over-the-air on Cox. When I watch the DVD on my or someone else's TV, it looks fine. It's been a learning process on what to do differently.

I am glad that some people are thinking of doing things like this....Keep up the good work!

  3. I think the UFL will work but, question if it will work here. Our area is full of people not from here and most are from places were there were and are pro teams. The support would have to come from residents of the 757 metro originally from here mostly. I can't see a New Yorker or Philly native going to a UFL game when they have pro teams they support from here via cable/network TV! I want it to work here totally but, I must admit we can be flaky in the 757! Hopefully those not from here can join in with the locals and support. Great points about college sports because its easy to get support from alumni and locals because you grow to love those teams for generations who went to the schools and possibly your kids as well.

I like the UFL's model so far but, they need ESPN or a major network because I didnt know they were on Versus' Network till we were awarded the Norfolk franchise this year. I watched a game the other day and was entertained. They had names I recognized from college and the NFL. That was cool to see to me. Better promotion and a better network could work. We identify sports with certain networks and not Versus' Network. Nothing against Versus' Network at all but, I dont know it for football and basketball nor baseball, the major sports in the USA followed by the NHL and Nascar no particular order being Nascar is far more popular in the states. I hope the UFL works and will do my part!!! LGNMlaugh.gif

I say you are wrong because I know a Philly native that bought season tickets for the destroyers!

  4. was riding down rosemont leaving hybrid training center and seen a sign about a person running for city council. They were running on no light rail.....no means no. If Vabeach doesn't get in on this the light rail in Norfolk will fail.....it is critical for the connection between cities to make this successful. I usually don't like public money being spent but I really think to make this area attractive to bring in jobs this overall project must be successful!

  5. I've been here all of my life and seen promises of change but it always stays the same. I hope you are right but I don't think we will see this region to change. Light rail is not going to fix our traffic problems. There are too many other places to put your business at and not worry about major traffic. State is not on our side. I hope your plan does work.

  6. I'm out looking for a job and most of the tech jobs are in DC. I don't forsee any of the leaders of this region changing any of this. I fear that I will have to move away from here. When is the region leaders going to get it through their heads that we must diversify our regions economy? We must get more technical, R&D, engineering jobs. I feel that we are our worst enemy. :(

  7. I always wanted to know what that area was called, I just called it south of NSU. That is the next hidden jewel of the area if you ask me. That entire area can be "Norfolk-a-New" if done right. Especially considering that SQP is out... It is one piece of property back there that looks somewhat historic, but I doubt it, I think they are using it as apts..

What do you mean SPQ is out?

  8. I didn't mean for that to become so much of a housing cost rant, but I agree with you. I've ragged on them in the past, but I have to give Fraim and (formerly) Oberndorf a lot of credit for how they've built their respective cities in the last 20+ years. However, the next step needs to be landing another Fortune 500 company, a civilian company that can help the local economy. I'm 27 and love the area, but there's not a lot being offered for the young professionals. It's time for the mayors to start looking into that, and realize that the nearly 2 million people in HR is more than just military. And offer some competitive salaries, stop acting like anything over $35,000 should be reserved for someone with 10 years experience and a ton of Master's degrees. $35K is really not a lot of money, esp. when the average apartment is close to 4-figures...

The solution to making DT Norfolk grow is not luxury apartments, but more office towers to lure businesses.

Really govt can't create the jobs. All they can do is make it a business friendly environment and hope that businesses notice it. Wish the feds realize that...there is more govt jobs in america than privatized jobs. I think that we can't rely on the people running this region anymore to change the region the way it needs to be.

  9. I think the thing that drives so many away is the low pay vs. high cost-of-living. The military definitely impacts that with the housing allowance. I love this area, but the prices on some apartments and condos are ridiculous. Prices need to go back to their early-2000s rates. Even if you adjust for inflation, a house/condo that sold for $75,000 c. 2003 should not be $125K! The bubble burst, but housing is still ridiculous here. Yet, salaries remain low.

I'm talking more at the corporate level. Why is it so hard for this area to pull in the businesses or create the businesses here. Is it the leadership here that doesn't know what to do to create the environment? Are they too comfortable making their money and not worried about the rest of us?

  10. with the recent announcement of JFCOM shutdown, do you guys think our local leaders will get it in their heads that we need more than the military here? what makes the environment in this region not so business friendly? There are alot of nice size cities that are not a pass through from other cities. I keep thinking about what could be done to change this region to attract better higher paying jobs but I can't come up with any ideas as to why no one wants to be here. Maybe with the large amount of military they don't want to be here. opinions?
