  1. CNN Money released its list of "100 Best Small Cities in 2008" today. There was not a single South Carolina community on the list...tsk tsk.
  2. Last year the Greyhounds played at home at the old Travellers Rest High School field. I read on their websight that they are looking for another home field for this season. Beware if you loolook at their website (greenvillegreyhounds.com), because it is a real mess.
  3. I believe it is just the one night. Not much of a line-up, in my opinion.
  4. Last Friday, I tried the Vietnamese restaurant on N. Pleasantburg, "Saigon." It was very, very good. The place is really clean and nicely decorated. Quite small, maybe ten tables? I had a bowl of Pho, but they have an extensive menu, lots of pictures for the unfamiliar. Not sure about the cross street, but it is right across the street from Taco Casa.
  5. Finally, we can enjoy the fine Belgian beers here. I have been having them shipped in from a place called "Liquid Solutions" in Portland, OR. The shipping...OY!
  6. I don't know where it is appropriate to place this. Some months ago, the smoking ban was a hot topic. Just before I left Seattle a year ago, Washington State passed a state-wide ban. Here is an article about the results: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/loca...nosmoke12m.html
  7. When I fly for work, I fly out of GSP. But when I go to Seattle to visit family, I drive to Atlanta. Why? 50% to 100% cheaper, no contest. As much as I'd like to be a booster for my new home town, I can't afford that price difference. Sorry if you conclude that I don't "do my part," but it's all I can afford. Gvillenative, I don't understand why you put "save money" in quotes on your message. The savings are real, and for me, necessary if I want to see my grandkids more than once a year.
  8. I suppose one might consider Monsieur Bonaparte to have lead France to a victory or two...
  9. I live only a few blocks from Kim's, and stop in at least once a week for take-out. The food really is well made and fresh. Quite a surprise for such a tiny place.
  10. Very nice, puskunk. Many levels there.
  11. When a municipality passes an ordinance like this, it causes some grief for those business located on the edges of the boundary. You may have noticed that some GVL County business immediately started advertising, "Smokers Welcome." I won't enter into the should/shouldn't debate, but if such a ban is going to work well, it needs to be on the state level, and be done with it.
  12. What is the area known as the "Pee Dee?"
  13. Who Am I ... Name: Patrick Age: 54 City of Residence: Greenville (since June `06) Occupation: Regulatory Professional (I know, I know, "What the heck is that?") College: Evergreen State College, WA (Grad BA 1978) Born: Ft. Belvoir, VA Raised: Seattle, WA Hobbies: Films, Books, Grandkids Other Cities I've lived in: Seattle, WA; Winlock, WA; Bellevue, WA; Chehalis, WA; Olympia, WA; Los Angeles, CA Hey There, I'm living in Greenville and loving it. Quite different from my home town of Seattle, particularly weather-wise. Thank you all for being so welcoming.
  14. I hope this is an appropriate place for me to pose this question; I wasn't certain. I have a question about liquor rules in Greenville (or maybe all of SC?). I moved here a few months ago from Seattle. I owned a restaurant/bar there, so I was intimate with the regulations. But here, I seem to keep butting up against contradictions. A couple of months ago, I walked to the checkout counter of my local Bloom on Sunday with a bottle of Pinot Noir. Man, you would've thought I was trying to purchase crack cocaine, for the reaction I got. Another time, the day I arrived here I was staying at the Hyatt downtown, and the bar had only mini-bottles, like they serve on airlines. They said a law had recently been repealed that allowed individual drinks to be mixed only from the mini-bottles, and that they were using up inventory. Even my colleagues can't agree what the rules are, and the state regulations site is out of date (still refers to the mini-bottles). So, if any of you fine citizens of my new home can fill me in, in plain English, what the rules are, I would be in your debt. It might save me more embarrassing moments... -Patrick
