Whole Foods coming to Columbia

Columbia is finally getting a Whole Foods! The article from The State says it'll be on Devine. They're a good citizen to have in town. They've gotten involved with such things in Greenville as "Trees Greenville" and other community-driven efforts.

Despite what UP members have said, the article states that Whole Foods will fill a niche in Columbia and residents have long pushed for a store. Good to see it happening!

It's good to see them go for an in-town location as opposed to traffic-clogged Harbison. Hopefully some of the other retailers currently missing in the market will follow suit.

They really picked a good location. In town, near USC, Fort Jackson, and a bunch of land that can be developed into (hopefully) quality urban homes. That area needs a little boost and this will likely trigger a lot to happen around there. Is the K-mart still open by this site? I used to love the cool bridge to cross the creek when I was a kid. Maybe this development will help Midtown out?

The trees alone will make a dramatic difference for that entire big chunk of real estate. Maybe the store will help support Columbia Green.

Hopefully this will inspire the BoJangles to remodel! I am suprised that it will take a year to complete however (based on the signage: Fall 2012).

Notice on the site plan that Bojangles is the only parcel without a canopy. If the development causes them to remodel significantly, the tree ordinance will require them to put in their own.

BASIL Thai restaurant coming to Columbia

• Basil, the highly popular Thai food restaurant in metro Charleston and Charlotte, will add a fourth location in Columbia by October.
  
• The 3,250-square-foot restaurant will be in the new Whole Foods-anchored Cross Hill Market shopping center at 700 Cross Hill Road at the juncture of Devine Street and Fort Jackson Boulevard.
  
• The new 100-seat restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner and include a 1,250-square-foot outdoor patio space for an additional 45 patrons.
  
• Basil joins Cross Hill Market's other recently announced retailers that include Charleston Cooks!; Nadeau Furniture; M Boutique; Hand & Stone Massage and Facial; American Roadside Burger and Jamie Scott Fitness.

The State has a good story about all that it took for Whole Foods to come to Columbia, going back to 2004. Apparently, they are pickier than other retailers.

Ulta was confirmed as another store in Shop Around this week. The store will take a 9,800 sq.ft. space near Jamie Scott Fitness.
