Charleston's Design Review Board (formerly known as the Commerial Corridor Design Review Board) will be reviewing at it's Sept 22 meeting a new 100 room Hampton Inn hotel proposed to be built on vacant property between the "round Hoiliday Inn" and the Waffle House on Savannah Hwy. The proposed hotel is 7 floors with parking and lobby on the first level.

I don't understand the opposition to this. West Ashley has been spared from funds because of the other TIFs, why should they do without and not get benefit from a TIF of their own.  

This isn't a very big area either.

The TIF is a go. Sounds like some real progress is being made. Maybe the city putting more focus on this area will lead to more annexations of the unincorporated areas too.

Per the Post & Courier article  the only Penny store in SC closing is at the Greenwood Mall.  There is no Penny store at Citadel Mall.

There was a Penny store at Citadel Mall, closed in 2017.  It's being converted to a MUSC healthcare facility.

drove by it yesterday and the conversion is fully underway now.   There were lots of construction workers there.  Medical tenants like old mall sites as there is ample parking and this will have lots of people coming to the mall (not sure how much overflow the mall will get though).

I noted in the Mar 7 TRC agenda that a 90 room hotel is up for approval at Citadel Mall.  Not sure if this will connected to the mall or will be built on an out parcel.  I am not familiar with the owner's name.

City secures land for 60 acre park in West Ashley

 

A narrow strip of land on either side of Ashley Hall Road near Raoul Wallenberg Boulevard doesn’t look like much to drivers passing by. But it extends for acres into what is currently inaccessible marsh and forest.

The city of Charleston plans to convert that land into a nearly 60-acre park thanks to help from the Charleston County Greenbelt fund and a donation of property from real estate firm The Beach Co.

 

When combined, the properties will be turned into a “passive park,” Kronsberg said.

Due to restrictions on the use of greenbelt funds, as well as the ecological sensitivity of the land, the park will need to be developed with minimal impact to the natural environment. That means no massive parking lot, swimming pool, recreation center, amphitheater or the like. 

Instead, Kronsberg said he pictures nature trails, a crabbing dock, a kayak launch and picnic areas as the main attractions. All of those details need to be worked out and will be determined with the help of public feedback.

Using the land as a park will also help manage storm water in the area. Previous proposals for the property have called for up to 70 apartments on the site, which the current zoning code allows. But after the city underwent the Dutch Dialogues flood research program, low-lying marsh areas were identified as high-priority areas to limit development.

The combined properties include 34 acres of marsh, 11 acres of water and 12 acres of high land.

It's already built and not in West Ashley but the Neck area.

This Holiday Inn the round one is getting to be rare and I hope this is standing a long time into the future.  The one in Raleigh is slated for demo in the next few years to be redeveloped.  These round Holiday Inn dotted the skylines of many cities.
