Charleston tourism industry

Came across two articles recently concerning the tourism industry in Charleston I thought would make for good discussion here.

This one appeared in today's edition of the P&C, and it talks about how the tourists are in the city, but not spending much. As the article stated, "Worries about the economy have not stopped people from traveling to Charleston, but it has put them on a budget."

This one appeared in the Charleston Business Journal, and it talks about the slumping numbers at the region's historic sites--mainly due to newer attractions vying for the time and attention of tourists. Also, there are the attractions that are free and just as fun, such as strolling down King Street, visiting the Battery and Waterfront Park, etc. I guess this is a potential downside of having a lot of attractions.
