First look revealed for downtown amphitheatre

Members of the Downtown Development District got their first look this morning at the Capitol Park amphitheater, which will replace the A.Z. Young building. The amphitheater will provide seating for up to 3,800 people, says Gary Dunn of GD Architecture. Dunn says the structure is being designed to accommodate small events, such as political speeches, and large events, such as performances of the Baton Rouge Orchestra. The amphitheater, which will be nestled in a grove of live oaks, will serve as an entertainment bookend on the other side of downtown. Final designs of the amphitheater are still being developed, and it will take between six and nine months to build the structure.

*compliments of businessreport*

I think this will be a very nice addition to downtown in the Capitol Park Complex and the nearby riverfront!! + It will be replacing the hideous old A.Z. Young Bldg.

Nate to the rescue!!! THAT's IT!!! :w00t: Thanks so much! Where did you find the old rendering?? I'm sure the new rendering might show more detail, but yall get the idea!! Great addition and finishing touches on the Capitol Park Complex!

The more gathering spots in downtown, the better. This will be very nice, like Bryde said " it would be a great location for Live After Five! Esp. with all the construction about to begin on North Boulevard.

From the Advocate- the ampitheater could be finished by 2008.

At less than $2 million, an amphitheater nearing construction beside the State Capitol represents a tiny chunk of the roughly $300 million spent on state offices and parking garages in downtown Baton Rouge during the past decade.

Yet the amphitheater has the potential to change the face of Capitol Park as much as any of the structures that surround it, officials say.

No amphitheatre...but at least it's something...could have posted in the Capitol Park Complex...some of us here on UP have mentioned this was not the best location for the amphitheatre anyway...

Work may begin soon on Welcome Center Park

The state-funded, $1 million Welcome Center Park will be a green space for primarily passive use, with benches, seat walls and planters. There also will be power available at the site for special events. Landscape architect Joseph Furr, whose firm is working on the project with lead designers GD Architecture and Noland & Wong, said the space — anchored by a Great Lawn — could be used for galas, school groups or something like the public library’s book festival.

But he said the main emphasis of the design is to circulate people from the state parking lot to the welcome center and into Capitol Park.

“At the end of the day open green space is really the direction we wanted to take it,” said Furr, who discussed the project Tuesday at the Downtown Development District’s board meeting. “It gives us a very nice green space at the north end of the arts and entertainment district that is a bookend with the Town Square project at the other end of Third Street.”

The piece of land is the site of the former A.Z. Young building between the Pentagon Barracks and the LaSalle Building at Third and Lafayette streets.

I was thinking that they can incorporate a decent sized amphitheater off Dalrymple by the Bark Park. There's sort of a slope there now. I know it isn't as big as what's needed, but it is something....
