GREENSBORO — The City of Greensboro is considering leasing office space to be the home of a new Elon University law school.

In a memo to the City Council, City Manager Ed Kitchen said the university “expressed particular interest” in leasing the old Central Library building at the corner of Greene Street and Friendly Avenue for the law school. Kitchen is scheduled to ask the council on Tuesday for permission to negotiate a lease for the building.

Elon spokesman Dan Anderson said the school’s trustees would decide in March whether to move forward with plans for the law school. A group of university officials identified downtown Greensboro as the best place for the school, and a group led by Action Greensboro is working to provide financing for the project.

The private university, which is based in Alamance County, has studied whether it should add a law school to its program for about two years. Law students here would have ready access to federal and state courts, as well as major law firms and corporations.

The proposed school would have 350 students and about 40 employees. Elon would join five other North Carolina colleges that have law schools - Campbell, Duke, N.C. Central, UNC-Chapel Hill and Wake Forest.
