Hudson's Bay Company is Sold

According to this article in the Washington Post, the venerable Hudson's Bay Company has been sold to a billionaire from South Carolina. While I don't doubt that this is deeply wounding to the Canadian psyche, seeing the stores close would have caused greater sorrow. I always liked visiting the Bay when visiting Canada. I hope the stores won't be cheapened.

That's Canada's oldest company, period. Even though I'm proud to be an American and I guess it will work out okay for all involved, it still has to be hurtful to Canadian pride at some level.

Best I can remember, The Bay had an agreement with Federated Dept. Stores that allowed The Bay to sell the Federated Private Label Brands like INC, etc. This may just be a natural progression in North America. At least Holt Renfrew and Simons in Quebec are still around.

I had thought that Holt Renfrew was also still in Toronto. They had a store in Yorkville. Perhaps it's gone now.

I think Holt's is Nation-Wide. I know I went to one in Edmonton. Simons is the Quebec Provencial Store.
