Mississippi Photo of the Day

I have been derelict in my duty to the forum.... I suppose I need to activate a Flickr account. While my fancy cameras are all in Florida (in various states of disrepair), I just got a new phone which supposedly takes OK pictures. I'll have to try it out.

Longwood, Natchez

Begun by the eccentric Dr. Haller Nutt shortly before the Civil War, Longwood was to have been one of the most spectacular houses in America. As hostilities began to simmer, the Philadelphia workmen dropped their tools and went off to war, leaving the house just six months before completion. The design was straight out of Samuel Sloan's architectural pattern book. Sloan's design for an "oriental villa" was never intended to be built, being more of a fantasy than much of anything else. Nutt's immense cotton fortune ensured that at least part of it would become reality. The family lived in the completed basement floor for many years before the house was given to the Pilgrimage Garden Club.

Speaking of things Natchez and West MS. I don't remember seeing much if any discussion here about the Ruins of Windsor. Here is a fairly recent picture and also a rendering of what it would have looked like before the fire.

According to several sources a fire was started in 1890 by a house guest who accidentally dropped a cigarette into a 3rd floor debris pile left by carpenters making repairs. Everything was burned with the exception of a few pieces of china, 23 of the columns, the balustrades and the iron stairs.

Jefferson College, Washington, Mississippi

Built in 1817, this military college had opened and closed several times before finally closing in the early 1960's. The East and West buildings have been restored. The center building was removed. It is maintained by the Park Service today.

The Sun'n Sand Motor Hotel in Jackson

This motor hotel from the early 1960's has a certain kitschy Polynesian charm- it's Tiki bar inside is a perfect example of the cultural kitsch popular at the time. It is almost as certainly going to be flattened soon. Perhaps someone will save the sign.

This striking building is the centerpiece of the Pearl River Resort near Philadelphia, Mississippi. Designed by Arquitectonica of Miami, the 29 story tower is shaped like a nautilus. Further improvements are planned for the resort, a development of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians.
