Maybe there's a 9-story basement or someting ;), but I don't recall ever seeing 39 as the number of floors. I've always seen 30. I'd prefer 39 though!

This update is from Wednesday, January 30, 2008. The darn thing is such a puttz and is taking 4EVR to build. At this rate, Trump Tower in Chicago will have been open for 2 years while Greektown is just finishing topping out! lol

Thanks for the pictures Michi! I haven't looked at this thread in a while, but your first pic makes it look like Greektown is having a nice impact on the skyline. Also, I love the last picture, I don't know what other people think, but it looks like the MGM Grand turned out great. It seems to successfully integrate old and new design elements.

My cousin was a part of the design/construction team that did the Four Winds Casino in New Buffalo, MI. He was in town this past weekend and I gave him a very detailed tour of our casino facilities. We spent about an hour in each one as he did evaluations. When it comes to building systems planning, these people are as thorough as it gets!

Just thought you would like to know what others from the industry have to say. Anyway, here are his opinions:

Motor City: Gaming area is cluttered an unattractive. The interior does not flow, and as a result may detract from the experience of the casual visitor. The extensive non-smoking area on the lower level may be a big attraction though. As for the hotel, he said they hit everything spot on from the building to the amenities. The views from the hotel facing south are enough to make one forget about the attractions downstairs.

MGM Grand: "Luxury at it's finest." We ate at Saltwater, and he said it was everything he had expected, and more. He said the gaming area flowed as well as any he has ever seen. The signage on the gaming floor helps one not feel lost. The consistent theme added to the class. The bar in the center of the gaming floor is a welcomed change from most open floor casinos that usually put cashiers in that area. As for the hotel, he said that he enjoyed the attention to detail in the rooms and the staff well trained.

Greektown: The incorporation into the existing neighborhood is on a level he has never seen with a casino. He said he would expect a large renovation of the existing gaming area once the expansion opens to help keep the continuity and fresh appeal. Although it does not have the "upper class" feel of the MGM, it is probably to most welcoming to a casual visitor. Obviously we did not get to go through the hotel, so that will have to come later.

I love the glass and design on greektown. I think it's gonna be beautiful lite up at night and it looks really good from campus martius. I just wish that the casinos here would build as tall as the windsor casino....But I'm guessing since the casinos have been doing so well they'll build a second tower in the future like windsor has.

I doubt the casinos are going to build additional hotel towers anytime soon. For one there are thousands of hotel rooms in the city that are coming online all within a short period of time. Right now the market is oversaturated and it will probably remain that way for many years. Eventually demand will pick up and maybe we might see additional towers in a decade or two...

Me and my girl went the Greektown Pizza Papalis for lunch today and I had the greatest time, lol! In the non-smoking section on the 2nd floor with the big glass skylight, there is a beautiful view of the new hotel! It is a phenomenal view, and I actually got scolded a bit for watching the construction instead of paying attention to the conversation.

Welcome to the secret club of big dorks! ;)

Who knows when the crane will rise. That tower is such a puttz, I don't even care anymore. Although it is nice to see the glass facade progressing rather decently. If you want to see speedy construction, go watch the Griswold Garage. :)
