Casinos could soon be legalized in North Carolina outside of Indian reservations

Online sports betting in North Carolina is expected to be approved but state legislators from both parties support legalization of casinos across the state. This means a casino would no longer just be allowed to operate on Indian reservations. Basically anywhere in North Carolina. If passed North Carolina would likely follow the Virginia model which recently legalized casino gambling. Four casinos are going up across the state including a Ceasars Casino Resort now under construction in Danville, VA 40 minutes north of Greensboro. I could see one going up in eastern North Carolina which has been desperate for economic growth for years. This could also mean we could see casinos in the larger city areas like Charlotte, Raleigh and Greensboro. Even Asheville or coastal cities.

State leaders are concerned about these state line casinos in Virginia profiting from North Carolina cities which has really changed their attitudes about casino gambling in North Carolina. The state could start out with 9 casinos across the state and Eastern NC would likely be a priority with a few of them because of desire to bring economic activity in eastern North Carolina. Right now there is no time-line for the casinos but support is gaining steam. Meanwhile online sports betting seems to be more of a done deal in the short term future.

State gambling laws about to change? A developer is trying to rezone land north of Greensboro in Rockingham County (200 acres) for a casino. The Triad would be the first to have a casino outside of an Indian reservation. A bill that could potentially move forward in the state would only allow 3 counties initially to have a casino. Anson County which is close to Charlotte is one of those counties.

The whole thing is pretty surreal that this could actually happen. I do think its great. I know these casinos are being planned for locations near the state's three largest cities in adjoining counties but the state still needs to allow them to actually be built within the cities. I can think of a number of places in the Charlotte area and I can see Charlotte building a casino in uptown or maybe the Southpark area. In the Triangle, North Hills in Raleigh is a good fit along  with locations near PNC Arena. The new "Downtown South" development in Raleigh is also a good fit. In Greensboro, one could be built on the Four Seasons Town Centre mall property which also has a 1,000 room Sheraton Hotel and the Koury Convention Center.  Or maybe a site along the Greensboro urban loop.
