Chain Store Food

^Morrison's was at SouthPark too

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I remember that place as well. It was right next to Sears and I would always get fried chicken, blue Jell-O and cheesecake. Oh, and healthy stuff too :D

I miss the old cafeterias and their homestyle food. Piccadilly has gone downhill, and I'm indifferent to K&W these days. The food's just not as good as it used to be at either place.

K&W, is that the one on 51 near the park rd ext.? Was thinking its S&W. Iv'e only been there once, so I dont know what the food used to be like, but the old folks sure do love it. Went on a Sunday and there was a line around the inside and almost out the door. Probably took 30min to get to the food. Was great food though, and for a decent price.

^ Yeah, K&W has at least a couple dozen locations around NC, VA, WV and SC. The lines are a typical thing and so are the old people. I think the one i've been going to around here (at Tanglewood Mall) has had some labor problems, so the cooks aren't as experienced as they once were and it's affecting the food quality. I've never eaten at the Charlotte location, so I can't comment on the food there.

The big ones used to be Morrison's and S&W Cafeterias in Charlotte. S&W was noted for the elaborate art deco type buildings they used to put up. One of the few remaining example of one of these places is in Asheville.

The restaurant that sits in the parking lot of Park Rd. Shopping Center, dont know what it is now, was originally a S&K Cafeteria. The building was horribly redone several times as a Casa Gallardo, and god knows what else.

Like train stations of decades past, a city's restaurants were considered destinations for the city and were often elaborate buildings such as this. Eating out then was a rare event for most families and cafeterias such as S&W catered to making it a special event when they did do so.

Here's some more blasts form the past:

Quincy's Steak House - Easily lumped in with the other Southern Steak Houses, but home of the "Big Fat Yeast Roll," their mascot for the fresh yeast rolls that they brought to your table.

There is still a location on 74 in Monroe, though it doesn't even come close to the hot bars and salad bars that it use to have... ;) But the yeast rolls are still there! yummmmy

The Weiner King in Monroe (which is now a satellite TV distributor) on Roosevelt Blvd sat across from a drive-in theatre that showed porn. The screen actually faced 74! Even as a kid I found it funny that people sat and ate hot dogs on one side of the blvd. while Marilyn Chambers and Ginger Lynn were having a similar meal on other side of the street.

Quite possibly the most Weiners per mile in Union County.

and BTW, I do remember morrison's at eastridge on that shaky 3rd level. There was also a hot n now on franklin boulevard. What was funny about Hot N Now was you couldnt order anything off the hamburger.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Do you remember the Shoney's that used to be on the third level, also?

I remember Holly Farms Chicken from when I was little.  They had one on Battleground Avenue in Greensboro where Buffalo's Bar & Grill is now.  If I remember correctly, the chicken was really good.

Pizza Inn was a little more prominent. They were all over the place (even up here in Va.) and, like monsoon said, faded out quickly in the '90s.  There still is one on (laughs) Battleground Avenue in Greensboro.

Maybe Battleground is where chain restaurants are sent to die (LOL)  'cause the Godfathers Pizza I remember was on that strip in an old Bonanza Sirloin Pit that is now The Honey Baked Ham Co.

Also, if you guys miss Western Sizzlin', we've still got them in the Roanoke area.  In fact, you can have them ;)  They've become a lot more like Ryan's and Golden Corral in their latest incarnation.

Here's some more blasts form the past:

  • Quincy's Steak House - Easily lumped in with the other Southern Steak Houses, but home of the "Big Fat Yeast Roll," their mascot for the fresh yeast rolls that they brought to your table.

  • S&W Cafeteria - The once ubiquitous Southeastern cafeteria chain that started in the old Ivey's in Uptown.

  • Hot 'N" Now - Not sure if this one was ever in Charlotte, but they were in the Triad for about a year or so, next to Taco Bell usually.  They were a lot like Checkers or Rally's.  I used to make jokes about the mildly suggestive name as a teenager.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Hey SR....Whatever happened to Rally's??? You never see them anymore.

;)
