Specifically, the Catawbas, and for the purpose of keeping their reservation. That issue of Catawba lands being taken came up several years ago when the lawsuits and claims against title insurance companies came up. Interesting stuff.  Your book?  You wrote it?

No I did not write it and yes there was a big Catawba land claim that affected the Fort Mill Rock Hill areas years ago.  I meant a book I have.  the state line was bent to keep the Catawbas mostly in SC.

The Catawba reservation/land claim included territory that was a square turned 45º so as to be a diamond with a corner at N,E, S, and W. The N corner became the topmost part of the South Carolina state line. It is worth revisiting that state lines were on a map in London prior to the Revolution and had little relevance here on the ground in the colonies. After the states organized themselves into a Confederation and then a Republic then the matter of borders became more real and efforts to establish clear lines began. Lots of trading, lawsuits, and bizarre compromises followed. Example: New Jersey owns land under the water in New York Harbor.

What, you say, may be the point of owning underwater land? Because fill from subway construction, dredging and other activities makes new above waterline land thus New Jersey territory. Some lawyers have a specialty in such dark corners of the law.

Distant in time to us so the rancor has diminished.

Always good to see buildings get recycled.  And, happy to see yet another alternative fuel being thrown into the mix (pun intended)
