Miami-based Presidente Supermarket is taking over the former Publix on OBT near Florida Mall (Skyview Plaza?).

Also, the 47000sf Publix on Chickasaw Trail  is closing but expected to be filled by another grocer shortly. @HankStrong will keep ‘em busy!

From OBJ

Which one on Chickasaw?  There are 3.

Chickasaw & Lee Vista

Chickasaw & Curry Ford

Chickasaw & Lake Underhill  - Which was the first Publix I ever made a purchase in when I moved here all those years ago.  As soon as the moving truck was empty I came here to have some food in the house as it was the first grocery store I drove past in the pre-Google map days.

The above OBJ story also notes an Amazon Fresh may come to the Maitland/ Winter Park area, but has no firm details.

Meanwhile, Supermarket News takes a look at the second Amazon Fresh which has just opened in California. The chain is a lower-priced version of Amazon’s Whole Foods Market.

People on nextdoor are missing Publix on that Skyview Plaza like crazy. Hopefully this is a good replacement

Even as cities and college campuses have taken a huge hit due to COVID, Target is still bullish on both for its small-format stores. They.re also trying out versions as small as 6000sf.

With that in mind, hopefully someone in Orlando responsible for downtown retail (granted, it’s hard to know who that might be given the dismal lack of additions since Publix opened, even though the Eola P Is busier than ever after 12 years) should be waving banners and beating the drum to invite Bullseye and his pals to something like the Sentinel property.

It’s not like Target is unfamiliar with the market given the recent opening in the tourist zone and with one of the largest Targets ever proposed at Disney over toward the Webster. Like so many others, there just needs to be someone with a passionate interest in downtown to remind folks in far off Minneapolis that we have a seriously underserved neighborhood with all kinds of twenty-somethings that would love to have them close by.

Fun fact: 29 of the 30 stores Target opened in 2020 were small format stores. We need one downtown!

Also, Target stock is up 35% for the year. Apparently, even Wall Street has signed on to paying a living wage. It’s rather a shame the Dickens-era Republicans here in Florida haven’t:

The second Earth Fare has reopened in Florida. It’s in Seminole, a town in Pinellas County. The other opened last year in Ocala.

No word on a reopening date for the SoDo store, assuming that’s still coming.

I’ve been wondering if the Conn’s HomePlus store coming to Colonial Plaza seemed a little downscale for the power center. I mean, I don’t ever expect a Nordstrom there but it seems to attract a middle income customer to the big box assortment there.

Now, however, it seems the second local store for the chain is going to Highland Lakes on W. Colonial at Hiawassee. That center’s been going downhill so fast even the Target and Golden Corral gave up the ghost.

Apparently, the impression that Conn’s is essentially a cross between Badcock and Amscot may not be far off.  Given Colonial Plaza’s solid occupancy over the years (heck, even the outparcel’s a Chick-Fil-A, not a Checkers), I would have thought the owners could have held out for something a tad better.

So, a couple of hours ago I ordered the Charmin from Target. UPS just sent a text saying it’ll be delivered tomorrow (free shipping with my REDcard). Mr Whipple would be proud. Bullseye just tinkled on Bezos’ pants leg...

I think the answer for all our prayers is for Target to buy Publix and we could be done with the wingnuts in Lakeland once and for all...

I knew Winn-Dixie had really shrunk over the years but today a friend of mine who has stuck with W-D for decades had me looking at their website and I was a little shocked to see only three stores within an 8-mile radius of downtown.

If you haven’t been around since God was a child like me, your reaction is probably “well, duh” but when I was a kid there were more W-D’s in town than any other grocery store (heck, there was one on Park Ave in WP once upon a time).

I also was amazed just how promotional it is. They seem to rely on BOGOs even more than Publix. I suppose if you’ve got a herd of kids that can work out (and the bargains are mostly pre-packaged stuff that is not as healthy as fresh) but being single I’m thankful for Target’s more basic discounts.

“Where Getting Sloppy Is A Pleasure”? As Publix gets ready to replace one of its prototype smaller stores in South Tampa, plans are in the works for craft beers and a host of unusual (for Publix) amenities/

This sounds like @AndyPok1 ‘s kind of Publix!

In this story about Amazon’s latest eye-popping results, it’s interesting to note Whole Foods’ revenues are continuing to decline, even under Jeff Bezos’ tutelage.

Folks fail to remember the chain was on the verge of failing when Amazon saved their (vegan) bacon and even the vaunted retail giant hasn’t really turned it around.

As the failure of other “food boutiques” (thanks, @JFW657) has shown, this is pretty clearly a niche market whose raison d’etre has been co-opted by mainstream grocers like Publix. Don’t be surprised if Earth Fare isn’t a long term fixture in the edge of SoDo.
