Austin & Austin Metro Projects Compilation

One disappointing thing about the office project in post #123 is that the developers released a rendering of their vision for the project before they made the public announcement with the rendering that I posted.

This was their vision.  Now that would have been cool:

Here's a shot from this week showing the I-35 parking lot.  The only good thing about it is that you can take in the view of the Downtown construction while waiting to inch forward.  The two U/C towers in this photo are the Hotel Van Zandt and the Westin Hotel.

From this week.  A common scene downtown.  Pedestrians dealing with the construction.  The construction projects here are Dropbox's offices and the Westin.

Here's the federal courthouse that was completed less than two years ago with the IBC Bank building on the right.  I removed the IBC building from my latest project listing because it will open in November.

The big parking lot in front of the buildings is the site of the proposed 14-story Travis County Courthouse and the privately developed tower that will not have height limitations.

The two cranes for the Millennium Rainey residential project are going up this weekend:

The Millennium cranes will be located along I-35 between the two cranes visible in this photo that I posted earlier today:

The podiums of the 38-story North Shore apartments (on the right) and the 30-story Seaholm Residences (on the left) are completed.  So the tower portions of those two projects should start rising fairly quickly.  The tower portion of the 37-story Bowie (in the middle) went up pretty fast once the podium was finished.  The 39-story 5th & West condo tower that will be starting this month will be going up behind the high rise with the "butterfly wing" crown.  The proposed ~60-story Block 24 condo/office tower will be going up between the "butterfly wing" building and the tallest building in this photo on the right.  The ~30-story Green Water office tower that should be starting in a few weeks will be going up between that tallest building on the right and the U/C North Shore apartments in front of it.

The removal of the parking lot deck and one of the two buildings being demolished for the 24-story Hotel ZaZa and Residences was done pretty quickly today.  The second building to be torn down is having its facade saved (as seen in the second photo) prior to demolition.  The facade will somehow be incorporated into the new building.

The Colorado tower will be coming off my projects list pretty soon.  I believe the first tenants start moving in this December.  The largest tenants are a Permian Basin oil drilling company, two international software companies and a law firm.

Nothing to see here, but this is good news.  A site plan was recently filed for the ~60-story Block 24 tower.  Details and drawings aren't available yet, but it's good to see a new tallest moving through the permitting process.  This should be taller than the Fairmont which will also be a new tallest (if it gets built first).

This photo is from the NIMBY's presentation to City Council on Thursday about the Aloft Hotel.  They are being ridiculous and trying to stop the hotel from being built.  The main NIMBY is the hotel next door that doesn't want competition and the other is a bunch of hippies (IMO, of course) running a playhouse next door.  (I suspect that they are just looking for a "donation" from the developer to stop their whining.)  It's too much of a circus to get into here, but look for the Aloft thread in the Austin sub-forum at SSP if you are interested.  The Aloft is the beige rendering in the middle of the photo.

The construction webcam shot in post #308 only shows the construction going on for parking and rental car facilities.  But there is also a large terminal expansion project going on that will help accommodate the increase in international travelers.  Here are some renderings of the U/C terminal expansion.  It would be nice if the lines (both traffic and people) were as sparse as the rendering.

I'll be adding this proposed hotel to the next updated Austin projects list.  This was originally proposed back in 2011 and got all of the necessary city approvals to start construction.  But apparently financing was an issue, and it suffered a slow lingering death over the last couple of years.  But financing for Austin projects seems to be much easier to get these days, and the developers filed for an extension to the approved site plan today, thus bringing it back to life.  It's similar to the office project (and just down the street from it) in post #126 in that it's stacked on top of a historical building.

The site plan extension filing:

It's 26-stories and 336'.  Here's the last rendering (which is just plain awesome IMO):

Here's an update about Chicago based Magellan Development's proposed 5th & Brazos residential and hotel tower.  Magellan is also behind the SoBro tower in Nashville and the LPM tower in Minneapolis as well as many others in Chicago including the awesome Aqua.

It was announced about a year ago as a 35 to 50-story tower.  The rendering released at the time of the announcement showed it to be 47-stories, and the project is currently going through the city's approval process.  A document filed with the city indicates that 02/01/2015 is the planned construction start date.  Demolition of a bank building on the site has already been completed.

A photo of the model for the project that will be formerly presented to the City of Austin next week has made its way on line through a random photo taken by someone for the Chicago Architecture Blog where it was then shared on Houston's HAIF forum; then Austin's sub-forum at SSP and now Urban Planet.  The final proposal is apparently for a ~40-story tower:
