Here's the site of the 400' 500 W. 2nd St. office tower from yesterday.  There are two underground parking levels.

This is from yesterday as well.  The U/C towers from left to right are the Austin Central Library, Seaholm Residences and Northshore apartments.

Here's the U/C Hotel Van Zandt (on the left) and the U/C Westin (in the center) from yesterday.  The cranes are working the Millennium Rainey apartments which did not make my list of the 50 tallest projects.

Here's the site of the Rowlings Hall project which is part of the University of Texas McCombs' Business School from yesterday.  A popular restaurant was one of the buildings demolished for this project.  This one is too short to make my latest projects list.

Here's another view of it. The tall building behind it is the dorm from where Michael Dell began selling his first computers before dropping out of school to start his company.

The ABJ had an article with more details about the two new state office buildings proposals.  They are bigger than I expected, although the height is hard to predict without knowing their footprints.  One would be over 400K sq. feet and the other 360K sq. feet.  Since we don't have an income tax in Texas the state relies on oil and gas for much of its revenue.  If prices stay low, the budget hawks may postpone the projects even though the space for state offices is needed.

The excellent BuildingATX blog has some project updates.

Demo is completed at the 5th & West condo tower site, and site prep has begun:

Number 38 on my list of the tallest Austin projects is now underway as demolition of the site is completed.  It's the Cockrell School of Engineering on the University of Texas campus.  Here're a couple renderings.  It doesn't look too bad for an academic building.  But then again an ugly building that houses the school of engineering probably isn't desireable.

The crown on the recently completed Colorado tower has just started lighting up at night.  This building really looks in person.  But its location and the fact that it's only `400' unfortunately mean it doesn't stick out much in most views of the skyline.

Here's a rendering of a newly announced infill project on W. 6th St.  W. 6th is becoming a grownup version of the E. 6th St. entertainment circus.  I don't normally post about smaller projects like this one, but I thought this one looked cool.  It has good interaction with the street in area that is becoming more pedestrian oriented.

Here's what the site looks like now from Google Streetview.  This would be an obvious improvement:

Also from New Year's Eve.  The site of the future McComb's Business School on the edge of the U.T. campus.  It's named after San Antonio billionaire and big U.T. donor Red McCombs.  He's one of the principal investors in the Circuit of the Americas F1 track as well as the former owner of the Minnesota Vikings and Denver Nuggets.

Here's the new Austin Central Library going up at the Seaholm site.  Typical government project.  It's taken over a year to get three stories above ground while its U/C residential high rise neighbors (Seaholm and Northshore) are around 12 to 15 floors up now.

Here's the first 2015 Rev. of my list of the 50 tallest active projects in Austin that are at least 10-stories and/or 100'.  The highlighted projects are either U/C or have had their official groundbreaking and are financed.  The list should look a lot different after the first quarter because several of the projects should be completed by then, and several more will have started.

The Austin Business Journal reports that there are 8,649 hotel rooms in development around the Austin Metro:

http://www.bizjournals.com/austin/print-edition/2015/01/02/the-inn-crowd-if-you-re-in-the-hotel-business.html

My last list of Downtown hotel projects shows that 5,223 of those rooms are located in Downtown:
