Tiger Woods in Greensboro?

According to this editorial, there may be a good chance Tiger Woods could play the Wyndham Championship this year. Throughout his entire career, Tiger Woods has never played in Greensboro. The reason has always been about Greensboro having a bad calendar date on the PGA tour. Its always been scheduled immediately before or after a PGA major and the top golfers usually rest during those times. But this year is different. Tiger Woods needs those FedEx points to get into the playoffs which he says he wants to play. He has missed a lot of tournaments due to a back injury and now there has been some discussion in his inner circles about possibly playing at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro. Its not a done deal but this year is the best chance Greensboro has ever had luring Tiger Woods. The Wyndham Championship started out as the Greater Greensboro Open back in the 1930s and is one of the oldest PGA events in the country. Greensboro also has the only Donald Ross design course on the regular tour. Sedgefield Country Club is where top golfer Sam Snead won many tournaments from the 1930s to the 1960s. Its also the site where the Atlantic Coast Conference was founded back in 1953.

The field of competitors announced thus far both the W-S Open officials will occupy 38 of the slots in the tournament’s 48-player singles draw.

In addition to previously announced fan favorites John Isner, Tommy Robredo, Sam Querrey and Marcel Granollers, other members of this year's field include defending champion Jurgen Melzer, 2013 Wimbledon semifinalist Jerzy Janowicz and this year's Wimbledon doubles champions Jack Sock and Vasek Pospisil. All 38 players currently slated to compete in the Winston-Salem Open are ranked in the top 76 in the world.

Four spots remain to be filled by wild card entries, which in the past have gone to players like Andy Roddick, Tomas Berdych and Lleyton Hewitt. Four spots will go to winners in the qualifying tournament, while two spots are saved in case players qualify for the field under the ATP's special exempt rule. There will be an additional field of 16 doubles teams to be named closer to the tournament.

Dude is sorta backed into a corner points wise. If he wants to pull any potential success for this year unless he somewhat miraculously does well @ the Bridgestone or the PGA Championship, he would have to seriously consider it. As the article stated "Otherwise, there's only one more stop -- the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C., an event that few would ever have envisioned being on Woods' radar screen".

Sorta like the W-S Open in tennis, to get the absolute top of the line at the tournament, those top players are going to be somewhat compromised points wise to decide to play, considering the tournament dates.

Woods just dropped a few points also. In order for Woods to skip Greensboro, he would have to win both Bridgestone and the PGA Championship and that doesn't seem likely as poorly as he has been playing. The course in Greensboro is also the kind of course Tiger likes to play. I think Greensboro's calendar date on the PGA Tour is a double edge sword. On one hand it attracts a pretty good field of players trying to score those last point before the playoffs, on the other hand the big guns often skip Greensboro to rest between the PGA Championship and the playoffs. However Greensboro has attracted Sergio Garcia to play at the Wyndham. But this year its looking more and more likely that Tiger will play in Greensboro. Being the first time it would be a big deal for Greensboro. Local golf fans are in a unique position in actually rooting against him hoping he wont get enough points so he'll play in Greensboro.

Exactly. As I said citiboi, in order to play at the Wyndham he will have to determine that he has a severe deficit on points. Which may very well be the case. Like the W-S Open, the Wyndham date is indeed a double edged sword. The top players who are secure are not going to play either event. If a player, good or mediocre, is on the bubble then there's a chance they'll come. Regardless, I think the fields at both events are exciting and worthy of our support. Regarding Tiger, I mean OK he finally makes the Wyndham, but it is after he is on a perceived downward trend after multiple back surgeries. It's not like it's him performing at the top of his game. More like the Joourney cover bands that play the Coliseum. Sorta anticlimactic at this point. It doesn't give the Wyndham any credible street cred. per se'

USA Cycling and Visit Winston-Salem today announced that Winston-Salem has been selected to host the 2016 and 2017 USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships. The city has been home for the last two years to the Winston-Salem Cycling Classic, a road cycling race that attracts national attention and draws racers and fans by the thousands. The vacant 42,000-square-foot building at 505 N. Liberty St. in downtown Winston-Salem will be developed into an elite cyclist training center and is a leading candidate to become an official U.S. Olympic cycling training center. Steve Johnson, CEO of USA Cycling, did a site visit in November of 2013 and has sent a letter of support to W-S Cycling Classic committee. If selected, the center will be a U.S. Olympic and Paralympic training site where elite athletes train to complete on the world cycling stage. Plans include space for community wellness, a nutrition market and cafe, clinical research and four rooftop apartments. The Committee is in the process of raising funds for the development of the center.

There are just 16 of these facilities across the country, including the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte.
