Savannah, GA, a picture thread

I recently took a little trip down to Savannah, a city with an enormously rich history, and one of the best built environments for a city its size.

The amount of character and historic architecture is simply stunning. It's not something that Nashville could compare with in any realistic way -- but that is true for almost every city in the South. Only New Orleans and Charleston can be considered in the same company...and personally, I like the layout of Savannah much better.

The city is overflowing with live oaks and palms. The best thing about the old part of the city is the green space. More than a dozen small squares are laid out in perfect order, within easy walking distance of one another. There are plenty of other parks as well, varying in size. Residents in the inner city really don't have to travel far to find some type of public green space.

Anyways, enough talk. On to the pictures:

That whole section there comes from the area around just 6 of the city's squares (there are a few blocks between each square). It's seriously a small sample of what is there.

Here are a few shots from near the riverfront. There are a lot of places I saw where I couldn't snap a picture, including much of the commercial section of the city.

And that's that.

I'd like to end by saying, Savannah is certainly not a flawless city. There are plenty of the usual examples of inappropriate modern development (mainly 50s-70s urban renewalesque), and some real eyesores in terms of civic/government buildings, but largely, the downtown area is quite well preserved. There is also a Midtown district that is similar in development to Richland/Whitland and Belmont Hillsboro, but the layout is much better.

If you have questions about specific pictures, feel free to ask. I didn't label them -- it would take too long -- but I do remember most of the locations, if not the specific buildings.

Excellent pics! I love Savannah, it's one of the most beautiful cities I've ever been to. Growing up, we'd always take a day trip out there when we'd vacation at Hilton Head Island. The humidity in the summer time can be brutal though. I'd love to go back soon, but with the baby almost here ( a month away....ahhhhh! haha), it may be a while.
