Schmoozing? It's par for the course

Art Layton's calendar over the next month and a half pretty much consists of a lot of golf.

The marketing manager for CMH Flooring Products Inc. in Wadesboro isn't playing hooky, though. He'll be working hard, networking with suppliers, clients, and even clients of clients in the corporate hospitality tents CMH has rented at the two big upcoming golf tournaments.

In an unprecedented schmoozefest for the state, North Carolina is hosting the Wachovia Championship in Charlotte this week, followed by the U.S. Open in Pinehurst June 13-19. That means hundreds of executives will join Layton feting clients over barbecued salmon filet and drinks at one of the PGA Tour events -- or both.

Golf and corporate sponsors go together like Tiger Woods and trophies. PGA Tour events need business to underwrite the events, while companies see the golf course as a great way to market their brands and to retain and win new clients.

Can Quail Hollow host a major?

I was just talking with my brother the other day about whether Charlotte (Quail Hollow) could compete for the U.S. Open or another big tournament. Could we keep the Wachovia and still competively bid for another tournament since it's just one event for one year that would likely not come back for at least 10-15 years, if ever?

"The Wachovia Championship is a significant commitment for club members, who surrender their course for a period of time, then deal with the after-effects for several weeks after the tournament."
Yeah, I'm sure all the members of Augusta National are so bummed and put out by having the Master's there. <sigh>, what a burden. :P
