now... imagine this shot about a year from now, with additional cranes for TWELVE, the Wachovia condo tower, One Charlotte, and possibly Trump tower(s)... and imagine that they are all 2 - 5 times as high as they are now and attached to 25-50+ story uncompleted buildings.

I think the office building as rendered here will still look interesting from the ground. The curved portion sticks up far enough that from the ground you will see it curve and disappear behind the flat portion of the building. I think that would look quite interesting, and even leave a bit to the imagination. From that perspective, it could look perhaps even cooler than from the ground where the "S"-like curve almost looks borderline-tacky stuck on top of a rectangular-based building.

new style for Charlotte = good. I like it. I also hope it has non-right angles... and engaging street presence of some kind or another.

I for one think it's design is more interesting than any of the other condo towers we have so far (Courtside, Trademark, Avenue, 210 S Tryon)

That will probably all be true... and perhaps more directly, complimentary in the sense of the tenants that will be in the Trump being complementary to the type of business Wachovia will be bringing to their new tower.

That would actually make a lot of sense. Keep the grumblings of the bank employees at bay for as long as possible.

clever... that would be amusing. While we're at it we could name the park Pyotr Park. And have swan sculptures surrounding a pond (Swan Lake) and Nutcracker decor for Christmas. Then come up with answers for thousands of puzzled citizens and press members as to what in the world Charlotte has to do with a 19th century Russian composer....

Hahaha... after a statement like that I can't help but wonder what kind of feelings are actually behind that smiley. A block full of EFIS buildings one block from the square!!

Haha Levine, you snooze you lose. In a weird way I'm glad this got taken away from that area. Not only will it make the "land-Miser" look stoopid, but it will definitely work with the Wachovia complex to create huge momentum in third ward. Good gracious, the S Church/S Tryon area is going to look like Miami or something in about 2 years. Cranes EVERYWHERE!! I echo the hope for a nice area of street retail and pedestrian activity from those couple blocks of Church and all around the park. Also, if this all falls into place then the park will be completely surrounded by development just a couple years after it's completed! Hopefully this will entice the city to start providing more of these things.... and bigger ones!

I think you have hit it on the head. If the Vue just starts digging, their sales are likely to spike.

Catawba College in Salisbury has some kind of building called "environmental center" or something that I BELIEVE is LEED..... it's a pretty sweet building, built among some beautiful land/landscaping with rocks, trees, flowing water, etc.. Does anyone have any pictures?

Yeah, the Woodward building. I'm no big fan. Chancellor Woodward was great for the university academically, and this building is the epitome of that, our IT college grew and improved by leaps and bounds while he was here... heck, even while I'VE been here (5 years). The building is also the epitome of the architectural style he was trying to move the campus towards, though, unfortunately (IMHO). It's be interesting to see what direction the campus moves towards with Dubois now in place. We already know he's pro-transit, as opposed to Woodward. Hopefully he'll push for some high-class architecture in the uptown building at the very least.

It's a far cry from the LEED building many of us students were petitioning to have built, but whatever. It's kind of ironic to call it a student union when the students' opinions were ignored. Ho hum another boring architecture display at the University. I guess an LEED building would have looked pretty out of place amongst all that other drabness, anyway. Particularly the hideous Science and Technology building that I set foot in every day.

Some variety would be nice. There are a couple towers in Winston that used to change things up quite often while I was growing up there. The old Reynolds building would use different colors that had seasonal/holiday significance, and Pelli's Wachovia tower had probably 10 different light patterns they would change from night to night.... not sure if they are still doing that, but it was great. Hopefully a few of our new towers will have some variability in the lighting.

Felix Sabates has a history of being a very smart businessman and he was just doing what he felt would help Charlotte get the hall the most, being a team-owner in Charlotte... and apparently, it helped. His story is quite fascinating. Check out the wikipedia entry about him. Cuban refugee kid who ends up working his way to the top. He's quite generous, too. I was on the recieving end of a $1300 tip (yes, 1.3 Gs) from him at one of his Christmas parties a few months ago.

I really don't care one way or the other anymore. As was just said, it'd be nice, but that is a lot of money that could go to other stuff that'd be at least as good for the city. AHEMparks.... AHEMmuseums

That'd be great if some NASCAR officials saw these last 3 postings and realized they need to make a public announcement ASAP so people hear it from them and not from a bunch of UrbanPlanet people telling everyone they know and that cascading down.

I actually thought it looked rather cool. Definitely added a grit factor (not that I think that's necessary, but I like the effect in this case)... besides, it is likely to look sleeker by the time they're done with it. I actually hope it does look a little more decorated.

actually Ben Folds Five's first album was quite the rave on the indie scene when it came out, it was very original (who ever heard of a punk influenced piano leading a group with no guitar before or since) and got pretty much all excellent reviews.... and NC in the past has been more than just a blip on the radar screen when it comes to independent rock.... a lot of really good acts came from this state. Although I don't think Charlotte contributed a lot to that scene. Although, R.E.M. did record their classic first full-length album Murmur here. Hopefully Charlotte's best days are ahead of her musically. I certainly hope so.

I started noticing a trend of Google pointing me to this site whenever I would do a search on a new project in town. Then, after lurking for a couple weeks I saw a topic that sparked a reply so I joined. It's been my favorite website since. I even got a perfect grade for a class project where I explained the concept of a virtual community and then demonstrated using UrbanPlanet as an example. A lot of people in the class expressed interest in the subject and community, so hopefully that drew some members.
