  1. supposedly to add realism, they are going to hire a guy to ring the bells at odd times of the day and yell "sanctuary, sanctuary." sorry, couldn't resist.
  2. I went over to look at these today. The winner is kind of cool if you see it up close. The bells will reflect in the pool below, which looks like it will connect into the rest of the water park. However, the second place winner had a cool sundial feature....
  3. Both are wrong. Travelers Rest has put a dam across the river when no one was looking.
  4. Didn't the G-Journal say a few weeks ago that Boyd was planning on redoing plans for the entire block? I think the plans to redo the Bank of America parking lot will be scrapped and put into a new development.
  5. I noticed that yesterday as well. I called Greenville Cares so maybe they will fix it soon.
  6. The News building has some significance to greenville's past. It is a perfect example of the urban withdrawl the city went through in the late 1960s as vintage buildings were torn down and "modern" buildings were erected. It's a monument to bad thinking, and should serve as a warning sign that says "hey Greenville, don't screw up any more." maybe that can be the news' new slogan
  7. This is a little bit different happening, but something worth mentioning. The Upstate Hash House Harriers will be holding a Cinco de Mayo run on well, um, May 5. Starts at 6 p.m. behind Don Pablo's.
  8. Something going on in West End tonight...baseball game or something...not quite sure. Also Charles Townes statue unveiling is this weekend....
  9. Their site looks interesting. I'll have to check it out. Thanks for the tip.
  10. You might want to try Bangkok Thai on Pelham Road. I prefer it to Lemongrass, which is very, very good. Bangkok has a bigger menu, a cool atmosphere (they have a section where you sit on the floor) and the food is really good. Also, try the Thai place on Augusta/Mauldin Road. I think it is Royal Thai. They have the best yellow curry in the Upstate, but everything else is somewhat average.
  11. The building looks GREAT. Greenville owes you and husband a debt of service.
  12. That is interesting. When you say elaborate, do you mean like glass towers, and geometric shapes instead of the red brick?
  13. The city hopes to do something with its corner or at least it had wanted to put something at the stone plaza. I remember the idea of somekind of mixed use that resembled old City Hall tower. The accursed parking lot used to have buildings on it. I remember a story that the foundations got cracked by dynamite explosions from another construction project. They had to tear the buildings down. The family who owned the lot got mad about this and that is why nothing has been built ever since. As for the G-News, that is just a very ugly building. It replaced an ugly building too. My bet, is that one day another ugly building will go on the site. Which leads to a question, do you think the Peace family gave the money for the Peace Center and wanted it to look so nice because they felt bad for sticking the News building on the good people of Greenville?
  14. I think the school district owns that building or wanted to buy it from a local family about three years ago. There was some kind of tussle over it due to the Wade Hampton High renovations.
  15. Pogo possibilities? We may learn more tonight at County Council, but there are some big rumors that whatever it is will head to Millennium Campus. A full announcement may be made by the end of next week.
  16. I was under the impression the new courthouse was several years off no matter what? The budget hasn't been in place for several years now.
  17. The RiverPlace developers originally offerered them a place in the back of the project. The owners rejected saying they didn't want to leave their property at all, and if even if they did why would they want to move off Main Street and now pay rent to developers? Also want to clarify one thing out there that has been misreported here and in the Greenville News recently. What the jury decided was NOT new. This won't lead to any change in how political entities go about eminent domain. Go pull eminent domain cases in Greenville County and you will see that practically every person has fought the governments' offer and got more money from a jury. The Main Street Three are not some new standard bearer for eminent domain. They did what everyone else has done for years. And remember what Strom Thurmond said, and I paraphrase, " how come everytime I buy a piece of land the federal government wants to come along and build a highway through it."
  18. Amen to that. This topic has been the biggest story downtown for for the last four years. It's interesting to see how people look at what happened. It could make for a good book if anyone ever wanted to write it..though who would believe it?
  19. [i hope these folks that let there buildings become public eyesores and uninhabitable have fun spending all there taxpayer funds.
  20. yep. I looks like the white wall remains, according to the plans, because its shows their newspaper boxes at the corner there still.
  21. I went by City Hall today during lunch to look at plans. Still nothing on the statue will look like or who is designer. The basic design is in the News' courtyard behind that white wall. Statue of Greene is in the middle with an L-shaped about three-foot high wall around. That wall will contain the plaques to the others. The thing I am wondering about is they already have a fairly nice plaque dedicated to one of the Peaces, I think it is Roger, who was publisher and former U.S. Senator, at the corner. The new monument looks to be built on top of it.
  22. This is definitely on the Greenville News' corner. The have the green DPC sign there already. Oddly, the News has written nothing on it, but the Journal did a small piece last week.
