  1. So what you're saying is that, on that site, we needed to build a building with walls that angled outwards as they went upwards, so they would reflect down? Someone should tell GTech they're gonna hafta rebuild. Boy I bet they're not gonna be happy about this.
  2. Apparently, there's a big redesign in the works for the Rt 4/Rt 138 interchange in North Kingstown. Hadn't heard a thing about it, but they started work, I dunno, maybe 10 days ago. They've got trees down, mountains of dirt, and they're smoothing out new paths for the roads to follow. I know they had $4m set aside for unspecified (to me, at least) improvements to Rt 4, but I didn't think it would be enough for a project like this. The money wouldn't be coming out of the Rt 403 budget, would it? I know that's a pretty expansive project ...
  3. I think it looks very nice. I'd like to get a better look at the top, but I love the pic SOCOM took from ground level. Very nice indeed. I want it. Hey I've got an idea. You Hartford forumites: I'll trade you our two Waterplace towers for your H21. Anybody interested?
  4. Thanks, Garris. I've been working with Google Sketchup, trying to build a model of our Downcity skyscrapers, but I've been having trouble with Bank of America. That pic is just what I need!
  5. Love it! I get to see that building just about every day. That one and Trinity Church. And I never tire of looking at them. Pretty cool that I check into this thread, where one can expect to find photos taken all over the country and the world, and the first thing I see today is a streetscape that I recognize instantly without any need for captions. Thanks for that! It'll make a better picture when the Washington Square renovations are done and that metal fencing comes down.
  6. At the intersection of Rt 5 (Lambert Lind Hghwy) and Pontiac Ave (East St/Mayfield Ave) on the Cranston/Warwick line, there's a lot that, for as long as I can remember, has been an overgrown stand of trees. Odd-shaped lot, curved along one edge, sorta like taking a 2-dimensional oval and quartering it. Anyway, I drove by there yesterday: the trees are cleared, the lot is all torn up with construction equipment all over the place, and it looks like they're building something. Anybody know what?
  7. How strange. And they made this decision after they did all the work to gut the original building but (carefully) leave the framework intact?
  8. It's being renovated to become the Tower at Carnegie Abbey. Check it out:
  9. This is mostly for my own amusement. I took the scenic route home from work on Saturday: traffic on the Newport Bridge was temporarily stopped, so I pulled a (legal as far as I know ) U-ey and drove home taking the East Bay route, which I never do. This took me past the Tower at Carnegie Abbey, still being renovated, a building that towers over everything else in view, as far as the eye can see. Which led me to wonder, what are the tallest buildings in this state outside of Providence? These are just the ones I can get off Emporis: The Tower at Carnegie Abbey, 220 feet, 17 floors (Portsmouth) Pawtucket City Hall, 209 feet, 3 Towers East Apartments, ?? feet, 16 floors (Pawtucket) Fogarty Manor, ?? feet, 15 floors (Pawtucket) Slater Hill House, ?? feet, 15 floors (Pawtucket) Knightsville Manor, ?? feet, 13 floors (Cranston) Arlington Manor, ?? feet, 12 floors (Cranston) Clyde Tower, ?? feet, 11 floors (West Warwick) City View Towers, ?? feet, 11 floors (East Providence) Brook Village Apartments, ?? feet, 11 floors (North Providence) Citizen's Plaza, ?? feet, 11 floors (Woonsocket) Kennedy Manor, ?? feet, 10 floors (Woonsocket) Crepeau Court, ?? feet, 10 floors (Woonsocket) Park View Manor, ?? feet, 10 floors (Woonsocket) Saint Germain Manor, ?? feet, 10 floors (Woonsocket) Forand Manor, ?? feet, 10 floors (Central Falls) Feel free to note any that I've missed.
  10. From a distance, Atlanta's 3 tallest towers look exactly the same.
  11. I'm rather fond of that 8-story RISD building. What's its name?
  12. Why does Providence look so good in black & white?
  13. Looking at that pic, it's hard to imagine why.
  14. I think it's very fitting for the smallest state with the longest name. We don't have the size other states do, but we compensate for that in other ways. Or maybe, as I said before, we Rhode Islanders just talk a lot.
  15. Dear freaking god, these projects take ambition to a whole a new level. Hell, these ideas are so big, I don't even think ambition is the right word. Hubris, maybe? Wow, though.
  16. That pic is doctored. I was bored. Edit: as I have 110 there, I'm guesstimating it would be between 480 and 510 feet. I don't have a great eye for that sort of thing, so anybody who wants to be more precise can feel free to correct me here.
  17. Whoa! Now why have I never heard about this!?!? And you can read more about that here. Wow, what a huge loss for us. That would have put itty-bitty Rhode Island on international maps, no doubt about it.
  18. Dear god what a hideous job. Well it just goes to show. As they say, you can learn something new every day. Still, I imagine I could have lived a happy life without knowing that little factoid. See, now that's the stuff I like to know. This is exactly the sort of thing that makes me love Rhode Islanders for the crazy birds they are. Nowhere else in the world ...
  19. Is the Lowe's going to have a second story, or is the extra steel just going to be part of a cheap facade?
