  1. Recap on the weekend for Columbia Place. No news right now, but I beg and ask everyone to continue to call Columbia Place and request the stores you want there. (803) 788-4676
  2. TJMaxx is going to The Village At Sandhill. Marshalls just remodeled their exterior store at Columbia Place Burlington Coat Factory has no plans to come to Columbia Place. The mall paid over 2 million for the space and is looking for a tenant to complement the stores already there not the temporary tenants but yet the stores like The Limited, American Eagle Outfitters and others. I'll keep you posted.
  3. UPDATE FROM THE COLUMBIA PLACE WATCHER Many leases are up for renewel at Columbia Place and the mall management is confident that they will be renewed. Here's an update on Columbia Place. Steak Escape has closed in the Food Court, but it's not surprising because management as well as ownership has not been efficient since in years. No word on a replacement, but my speculation is that another franchise owner will take over where left off. Sam Goody is down to it's last 9 days in the mall. Sam Goody has closed over 300 stores nationwide in an effort to restructure and cut it's losses. Lane Bryant remodeled their Columbia Place store in 2002, but is expected to leave to open in the Village At Sandhill. This puts Lane Bryant in focus with it's new store types that typically target shopping centers and villages. Lane Bryant left Columbiana Centre a couple of years ago. JCPenney space is now in the malls court. If you didn't already know, Columbia Place's department stores were all owned by each tenant. Columbia Place now has possession of the JCPenney space that should speed up the process. Columbia Place is not going to lease the building but sale it to another tenant. There are numerous pending leases that are currently out for signature including the Lane Bryant and Sam Goody spaces, but all tenants are waiting for the sale of the JCPenney space before any decide to sign. From what I hear the space could be filled within the next 60 days. I'll be watching and keeping you posted. It's rumored that JCPenney's space cost 2 million.
  4. It's time I respond to the responses that Columbia Place should take on an urban image. I don't think so. Retail has always viewed the black customer as one that wants to wear Hip-hop clothing, jewelry and shoes. Columbia is a large black market, but not large enough to determine that all black people do is wear urban. Retail teaches consumers what they want. Only one such mall exists that is in a large black area that doesn't treat blacks second class (Mall at Stonecrest ATL). I'm a black consumer and that's the reason I feel that the media/others are wrong on the path Columbia Place should take. I don't wear baggy clothes or jewelry and I'm not one in a million. Many of the people visit Columbia Place and have been forced to choose urban based on selection. In prior years leasing agents have taken a new stance and said just because I have a bump on my nose doesn't make me ugly. The primary market of Columbia Place covers many upper income areas. With Columbia Place having a successful Dillards and the area's only Macy's this gives it a chance to draw opportunity. When O'Charley's pulled out and Don Pablo's went empty on the front of the mall speculation once again began that they would fill it with a club or mom and pop restaurant offering cheap Chinese Food or low end Mexican food. It was even said it would remain empty because Columbia Place was dying back then. WRONG....CBL looks further than the neighborhood behind the mall (all malls have a neighborhood they aren't proud of) it may have taken a year, but they landed Sticky Fingers and Charleston Crab House. The credits of the recent first Charlotte Russe to Columbia and in Columbia Place was forgotten as well. Stop saying what won't come and lets get some new ideas out.
  5. If you're not understanding what I'm saying, Columbia Place (Columbia Mall) went through a time period where it was plaqued by crime in the late 80s. Prior to that Columbia Place never acknowledged until 2004 that they had a problem with gangs. By then many of the retailers had left because of this. Since then they've restored the family environment. Of course all malls have mishaps, but it's much better than it was. I'm saying that Columbiana along with Columbia Police are not acknowledging the lower income people that live in the area and the recent increase in crime. Want an example of the crime in the area. Take a look at the Middle Eastern third world country looking school right near it. The media tends to only report on things that have been in the spotlight prior. We barely heard about a shooting at Dutch Square. But God if someone accidentally walks into Columbia Place and a box cutter falls out of their pants pocket, the story will make the top story. Columbia Place Unsafe due to a customer who had intended on cutting someone.
  6. Columbia Place isn't dying. IT doesn't take a day to undo what has gone wrong. I do remember a time when Columbiana had a STYLE SETTER sitting near center court. Columbia Place has spent 4 years convincing people that it's a family environment. THis is now the third year the Easter Bunny has been at the mall. Families are coming back out again. Dutch Square however has taken in all of what Columbia Place is trying to get rid of. Columbiana needs to watch out though, hud housing near the mall is starting to show it's slip on weekends.
  7. The deal with Wet Seal buying Rave has fallen through. Rave is still without a buyer. In most cases parcels that the department stores sit on belong to the retailer. Parisian's operating agreement is not up with Columbiana Centre. Despite the store is closed they are still paying on that space until Parisian is able to find someone to continue their lease. In some cases like in Columbia Place's situation the operating agreement had expired and they handed the space back to the mall and told them to find a tenant. My problem with people in Columbia is they don't support things when we get them and our dollars end up going to other states and malls like Southpark and Lenox. Everytime you shop at Express in Columbiana it's being monitored. Then when Brooks Brothers is looking for a location they ask "how does that Express do". We'll never have anything as long as we hunt bargains in Columbia and do our full day of shopping in other markets. JCPenney wanting Columbiana is just another response to spending habits and trends showing that we're still cheap.
  8. Hey Guys Here's an update on Columbia Place. It has not given in to becoming an urban mall despite a few temporary chains that have made a temporary home at Columbia Place. 2005 was a good year for Columbia Place despite area losses Columbia Place gained the following Charlotte Russe - 1st area columbia store. Ashley Stewart - nearest location Bush River Road Charcoal - First South Carolina area location Yo Taco - nice looking Mexican Restaurant for the food court Man Alive - A Division of Finish Line SC Place - Duplicate exists at Columbiana. Just to let you know. Limited Brands leases were up on January 31, 2006 so this must be a positive thing for Columbia Place. This could have meant the exit of The Limited, Bath & Body Works, Victoria's Secret and Express. Instead remodeling will begin soon on some of those stores and even Dillards plans to do some work on their store. I talked to the SC Place people and they mentioned that when the mall was owned by prior owners that Columbia Place was not on the list for them. Since the renovation things have changed for the better. The only major losses to Columbia Place can be gains for the space limited Columbia market. Also Bill Robbins, CBL Senior Leasing Rep from Chattanooga has found a home in Columbia, South Carolina to help lease Columbia Place. What better can you have than someone that is now living on the mall that can make sure deals don't pass him by to other areas. Before this leasing reps were 5 hours away in Chattanooga or even worst when owned by Richard E Jacobs Group, they did all the leasing from Cleveland, Ohio. Guys call the stores you want there and tell them to come to Columbia Place. I'll have another update soon.
  9. Just to let you know. Sam Goody and Suncoast are closing the following stores in South Carolina 188 Sam Goody HAYWOOD MALL GREENVILLE SC 29607 723 Sam Goody COLUMBIA PLACE COLUMBIA SC 29223 4727 Sam Goody NORTHWOODS MALL CHARLESTON SC 29406 4734 Sam Goody WESTGATE MALL SPARTANBURG SC 29301 5177 Sam Goody RICHLAND MALL COLUMBIA SC 29204 3164 Suncoast COLUMBIANA CENTRE COLUMBIA SC 29212 3363 Suncoast HAYWOOD MALL GREENVILLE SC 29607 3627 Suncoast WESTGATE MALL SPARTANBURG SC 29301
  10. New leasing rep for the mall has her work cut out. She's leasing JCPENNEY and possibly the former Toys R Us. Any suggestions you guys have for management or what would you like to see come. I wish Hollister would open.
  11. Macy's will not come to Eastland Mall. This will be impossible and way out of reach. Federated just merged with May Company and has a lot of stores they have picked up thanks to approval from the FTC. With this they are closing numerous May/Federated stores to cut down on the overlap. With this merger this means Macy's will have 3 locations in Charlotte. All Hecht's Stores will be converted to Macys by year end. So with all the money being spent to convert Hecht's in Charlotte to Macy's. I doubt money will be spent to open an additional location. If it does happen it'll be too late. I don't see Federated doing any new stores for atleast 2 or 3 years. ALSO Nothing says urban unless you visit these malls. RALEIGH SPRINGS MALL - Memphis, TN SOUTH DEKALB MALL - Atlanta, GA GREENBRIAR MALL - Atlanta, GA Now don't let this fool you into thinking that Macy's would come. Macy's has been there since the beginning and has made a commitment to the community to stay. What you will notice is the struggle for anchors as well at two of these centers.
  12. Ok, I was just in Eastland a few weeks ago. What happened to American Eagle Outfitters?
  13. Just wanted to add my two cents on an issue that angers me. I do not work for CBL or Columbia Place, but have done detailed research on my information before I post it. A recent article on Deadmalls.com points to Columbia Place as a dying mall. The article is completely inaccurate. It says Columbia Place's "local stores" have banners in many cases instead of actual signs and that the mall is on it's last cycle. The article also points to Victoria's Secret and Kay Jewelers as being former stores that have left. *This statement is not on behalf of Columbia Place, it's owners or management. It is on behalf of someone that actually researches information before publishing* Columbia Place is viable despite departure of a few big boxes surrounding it. If you are driving from any area of town to Northeast Columbia, Two Notch Road is accessible from I-20 or I-77 providing plenty of shopping from the newly opened Village at Sandhill to Columbia Place. Columbia Place has the only area Macy's and just did a renovation. JCPenney and Toys R Us leaving presents opportunity for management to redevelop. Do you guys not remember when Don Pablo's, O'Charley's and General Cinema left? Speculation was brought on that Columbia Place would probably never refill those spaces or something more degrading to the mall would take the place. To the surprise of others Columbia Place leased Don Pablos former restuarant to Charleston Crab House (exclusive in Columbia since Harbison location closed), O'Charley's location was leased to Sticky Fingers and General Cinemas was reopened by pioneers who headed Regal Cinemas who since started their own concept Phoenix Theatres which is slowly going nationwide. All of these things have happened on CBL's watch. CBL won't let Columbia Place nor peripheral properties go under. My words to the author of the article on deadmalls.com. Please do research first. Rashaad 8034797822
  14. As confirmed Toys R Us is closing their Columbia Place location. This leaves too major spaces to lease including the former JCPenney location. Good News: Columbia Place now has the attention of the Regional Vice President of Leasing. Jan Wills is now handling Columbia Place as well as 3 other Carolina Malls. Coastal Grand - Myrtle Beach, SC Cross Creek Mall - Fayetteville, NC Asheville Mall - Asheville, NC She's good and has her ear in the community listening to us (the consumer) Make a list of realistic stores that could come to Columbia Place.
  15. I just went to Columbia Place today and for those of you who know the signs of a new store coming. There is now a white wall on the interior of the mall between the mall and JCPenney. Which means someone is starting construction on the space for something NEW! We know they aren't trying to hide it or they would have done this before Christmas approached. Anyone who has inside sources please keep us posted. I'm doing my own research as well.
  16. Columbia Place is not catering to urban wear. The new owners are trying to undo what was done prior to their aquisition. See my earlier post. THe current owners believe that Arcadia Lakes and Forest Acres do exist and they are marketing newer stores that have opened to a crowd that typically would shop Columbiana. Just this year Columbia Place has opened Charlotte Russe. A store that many would say typically would have gone to Columbiana. If Charlotte Russe was that big on being in markets they would have gone to Eastland, but they didn't.
  17. Hechts will not come. Federated Department Stores bought May Co. and will do away with all of the regional nameplates changing them to Macy's. Bonwitteller closed due to bankruptcy. Their prices were outrageous for our city. When talking to Columbia Place management, I was told they are courting both Traditional anchors and specialty retailers to fill the JCPenney space. They are not yet sure what they want to put in there and are looking at the outlines of what different tenants could do with the former JC Penney space. Malls are moving away from the traditional department store format to compete and remain viable against newer Lifestyle Center formats. If you think for a minute that Columbia Place would go under. Let me send you the link to their home office. www.cblproperties "Take a new look at CBL"
  18. I talked to Rusty Phillips with CBL today and they have been talking to a number of names for the old JCPenney space. They want to make sure the fit really helps Columbia Place. Please leave your suggestions on department stores or concepts here.
  19. People fail to look at the idea that Columbia Mall was a Richard E Jacobs Group property. Columbia Place is the new company repositioning the former Columbia Mall to survive for another 25 years. Under Jacobs Group ownership, the Two Notch Road mall didn't see a renovation. It wasn't until 25 years after it opened that the first interior/exterior renovation was completed. Retailers were looking at leaving before knowing Columbia Mall would become Columbia Place. Disney Store closed in Columbia Place and closed most of it's stores nationwide leaving only major markets open. Disney Store had numerous stores in South Carolina and the nearest one now is in Charlotte, NC. Carlton Cards closed it's Columbia Place store and one year later closed it's Columbiana Centre store. Carlton Cards felt pressure from quality and lower priced Hallmark. Eckerd closed in Columbia Place because the mall wanted them out. Eckerd wasn't bringing in anyone. THe store didnt even have a pharmacy and people that visited Columbia Place with me found themselves laughing at the idea we had an Eckerd in the mall. Sharon Luggage filed Bankruptcy and closed all remaining locations throughout South Carolina. Luggage stores don't bring people to the mall either. Columbiana lost Bentley's a year later. Yes many of the stores abandoned ship for NEW Two Notch near Clemson, but sales figures for places like O'Charleys have missed the income brought by Columbia Place. We may have lost a number of big boxes, but we've gained and kept many. Marshalls just remodeled and doesn't plan on moving, Toys R Us remodeled and added Kids R Us at that location, Best Buy reported recently that Two Notch is their strongest store in South Carolina and they don't plan on leaving, Hine's Furniture just joined the line up and they are doing well, and Kmart has no plans on leaving. Hooters also joined the area and has reported success. A lot of the problem is blamed on the developers of the centers surrounding the malls. The developer of the center behind Columbia Place wanted rent that was ridiculous for the center. The center didn't compete with other area centers by way of expansion or keeping concepts fresh. The intial leaseup only included names that didn't survive through the 90s. The loop surrounding the mall also didn't have the traffic nor visibility to keep the tenants there. Not even talking about Decker Mall or Dentsville Square, we know these centers didn't have the leasing capabilities to attract national retailers. However, despite a few vacanies centers like Fashion Square across from Dent are still doing well. We may see more pulls of stores leaving, but with players like Fashion Square, Shoppes at Oneil Court, and Tillman's Plaza we don't have to worry too much. I know this is long, but I thought I'd mention that not every store in Columbia Place is a permanent store. The mortgage on the mall has to be paid and someone has to be paying rent to keep the flow of income coming in. There are two leasing teams for Columbia Place. Columbia Place Specialty Leasing which handles local leases for temporary stores and Columbia Place Permanent Leasing which handles stores signing for 5-20 years. When a store goes dark, Columbia Place's Permanent Leasing team begins working on a replacement for the closed store, but beckons the Specialty Leasing team to find something to fill the space until they get what they want. When Gap closed, Kis Golf opened in it's space until Charlotte Russe permanently opened. When Eckerd closed, Casual Leather And More opened in it's place until Ashley Stewart was found. Below are a list of permanent stores opening in CBL's reign and current temporary stores in Columbia Place whom sit waiting for the letter saying "we've found someone for your space". Most likely these stores relocate within the mall to another space and some close, but heres my list. PERMANENT STORES THAT HAVE OPENED SINCE CBL PURCHASED THE MALL IN 2001 Sarku Japan (mall needed japenese) Yo Taco (mall needed a mexican restaurant) Ashley Stewart (plus sized women's clothing) PacSun (an effort to place another name in the Family Clothing category) Charlotte Russe (to show that Columbia Place wanted better women's clothing) SC Place (a specialty store that sells good merchandise) Subway (needed one for years) Mobile Solutions One Stop Cellular Sprint Sports Fan-Attic (authentic sports items) Cingular Lim's (1st in South Carolina) Journey's (quality shoe store, not urban shoes) New York Gold & Diamonds Cato Man Alive (Opening Soon) Charcoal (Opening Soon) (coming because of Charlotte Russe's success) Finish Line (quality running store) Mastercuts (quality haircare to take strain off of Regis) Armed Forces Recruiting Center (get the ghetto in the military) Glamour Nails (needed a nail salon) Sticky Fingers (keep restaurants on the property) Charleston Crab House (add some class to the area) Phoenix Theatres (keep the theatre open) Three urban stores total have opened in Columbia Place. PERMANENT STORES THAT HAVE REMODELED SINCE CBL PURCHASED THE MALL IN 2001 Macy's Sears Footlocker (upperlevel and lower level store) Champs Foot Action Payless Shoesource Waldenbooks New York & Company Lane Bryant The Shoe Department Radio Shack PERMANENT STORES THAT HAVE CLOSED SINCE CBL PURCHASED THE MALL IN 2001 The Athlete's Foot (All corporate stores closed) Willis Chiro Med (moved outside to former Carolina First) Gadzooks (filed chapter 11 and closed many stores) Best Price Fashions (Chapter 11 and malls effort to get rid of urban women's apparel) Rainbow (malls effort to get rid of urban women's stores) Quizno's (local franchise company closed all SC Stores) Nut House (closed due to owners death) Eckerd (not doing mall stores anymore) Lenscrafters (moved further down Two Notch) Sharon Luggage (filed bankruptcy and closed all SC Stores) Gap (Restructuring forced them to close numerous stores) San Francisco Music Box Company (closed almost all stores except major markets) Thomas Kinkade (closed store due to saturation of market) Disney Store (closed all stores in South Carolina) Eddie Bauer (closed both Columbia Stores) Carlton Cards (closed both Columbia Stores) Zap Electronics (went bankrupt) O'Charleys (moved further down Two Notch) JCPenney (moved further down Two Notch) Pups Is It (mutual closing, this store didn't fit the clientele) TEMPORARY STORES CURRENTLY IN COLUMBIA PLACE Stores situated in temporary spaces which means these spaces are still available. Toys & Games Etc. (former Athele's Foot Space) ESES Shoes (former Gadzooks Space) Divine Creations (former Nut House and Zap Electronics Space) Urban Station (former Kinney Shoes space) Sissy's Furniture (former Lenscrafers) Happenings (former Shoe Department Space. Shoe Deparment relocated within mall) Poco Loco (former Record Town space. Need I say more) Milano Menswear (former Disney Store space) Dollar Saver (former Best Price Fashions Space) Just Casual (former Rainbow space) Shekinah Glory (former Flowerama space) Airbrush Unlimited (former Afterthoughts space) All in all Columbia Place's new owners are doing a good job with Columbia Place, but with 25 years of going in the wrong direction It'll take a while to reposition. More stores will close just as you know bankruptcys, relocations and leases come up, but not all will be replaced with Urban wear. Spencer Gifts didn't close on CBL's watch, but CBL is actively working with many of the tenants that closed to return to Columbia Place. Casual Corner was almost a done deal until they announced bankruptcy. I'll have another update later today on what is to come.
  20. CBL is a company that does not give up on their malls like so many others do. All you have to do to see people who don't have the potential or don't care is to drive up to Eastland Mall in Charlotte. I've heard others say that Columbia Place and Eastland are similiar, but I beg to differ. Eastland has no anchors showing any signs of wanting to stay put. The Dillard's there has turned to a Clearance Center and lets face it Columbia Place attracted Charlotte Russe, SC Place, Charcoal (midwest store), Man Alive (urban store that turned down Eastland), PacSun, Journey's and Mastercuts to the mall in recent years. In addition we all watched outside the mall as we lost our O'Charley's and the Don Pablos space sat empty. We were hoping and wishing for something nice to open. Even after Red Lobster and Olive Garden announced their plans to vacate and move farther out we took steps back and said they'll never find something nice to go there. We were surprised to know of Sticky Fingers and Charleston Crab House wanting to be on mall property. General Cinemas vacated the property and the mall found someone polished to operate the former theatre. Lets face it Columbiana does hold teh dominate retail landscape, but Columbia Place has snagged a few that should have done their flagship elsewhere. Since CBL took over Columbia Place in 2001 it's only gotten better. Things take time. We've gotten better stores, better security, and a renovation. CBL won't give up on Columbia Place. CBL also has a philosphy that if a anchor store doesn't work they'll find specialty retail to take it's place. DICK'S SPORTING GOODS STEVE & BARRY'S UNIVERSITY SPORTS WEAR These stores would be good fits for the market, but lets not give up and place the mall in the hands of BCF which we all don't want to see. CBL will surprise us and Columbia Place will remain a place to find more of the stuff you love Rashaad Columbia Place Watcher [email protected]
  21. Ok, I normally post things regarding the malls in South Carolina, but couldn't pass up this opportunity. Athlete's Foot (corporate version) went bankrupt in 2004 immediately causing all of it's corporately run shoe stores to close. The only remaining stores are those that are owned locally. A shoe store coming to Eastland Mall wouldn't be a bad thing when looking that Footlocker's division "FOOTACTION" has their number one store in Eastland Mall. The Footaction there has outperformed stores nationwide for years now. If you take an honest look at the mall what you'll see is that the stores remodeling are the ones doing well. I.e. the shoe stores. Champs is modern, Footlocker is modern, but Eastland is left with the underperforming stores small and dated such as American Eagle Outfitters. I visited Eastland Mall years ago when it was performing better than it does now. I noticed too many signs of demise when visiting the mall today. Starting with Dillards. Earlier in a post someone mentioned of Dillard's not displaying the Eastland location on the website. The reason being is because the Dillard's at Eastland is nolonger a full-line department store. It only offers clearance merchandise. "DILLARD'S CLEARANCE STORE". You can only enter Dillard's from one level of the mall at this point. Dillard's tends to hide their Clearance Stores and eventually kills them off. The last one to be killed was their location at Raleigh Springs Mall in Memphis, Tennessee. This store was a clearance store a year before it closed. Am I saying scream, run, cry, kick and leave Eastland? No! Other such malls like Eastland exist. Raleigh Springs Mall in Memphis, Tennessee is one so similar. AFter a shakeup with their anchors: Dillard's, JCPenney and Goldsmiths (later became Macy's) leaving the mall it was left Sears and a good number of stores. Should Eastland remodel? NO! Wrong thing for them to do. The area has had it and whomever puts money into Eastland to try to compete with Charlotte's newer malls will not get their investment back. It would be better to keep the cracks filled and keep paint on it, but not consider upgrading it to compete. Counting that Charlotte's malls all have Limited. The store in Eastland does the worst and other national chains catering to suburban greek crowds have once again failed the report card. Compare thh business of Limited, American Eagle, Victoria's Secret and Express to those of Carolina Place, Southpark Mall and even to Eastridge Mall in Gastonia and you'll be very dissapointed. Eastland is in it's last cycle as a regional destination. Lets keep it open for those who live around it who can't afford to shop the high class malls. Someone will buy it and finish filling the holes that we know will happen once the anchors and Limited Brands will leave. The focus now should be getting those dollars from the lower income neighborhoods surrounding the mall and giving them a place to shop Rashaad [email protected] (803) 479-7822
  22. COLUMBIA PLACE WATCHER HAS NEWS FOR YOU... SC Place to be located on the upper level next to Charlotte Russe Smiling faces and beautiful places. Celebrate your state pride with South Carolina, Palmetto Moon, and SC college themed clothing, flags, gifts and more. Charcoal to be located on the lower level next to Finish Line After doing much extensive research on this company. I found it is a 1st year apparel company opening numerous locations across the nation. They don't have a website but I found them across the nation in B-A style malls. Westfield Shoppingtown Southlake in Indiana, Cottonwood Mall in New Mexico and Granite Run Mall in Pennsylvania. This is their first location in South Carolina. Quoted from the marketing dierctor of Westfield Shoppingtown Southlake, "Charcoal is a women's apparel store that caters to women in their 20s by selling the latest trends. Charcoal competes and is in the same bracket as stores like Forever 21, Charlotte Russe and Wet Seal" This means Columbia Place is getting a pretty nice store and we all know that the space (former Eddie Bauer) location is still in excellent condition. Man Alive to be located in center court on the lower level. Man Alive is the nation's leading hip hop fashion retailer. Keeping it real, keeping it true to hip hop. Man Alive is the source for the leading men's and ladies's name brand, designer fashions from the world's top fashion designers and artists. I do not work for Columbia Place, its owners or management company. -Still, do not post contact info like that because it could be misconstrued.
  23. I've done my homework and the case is solved on atleast 2 of the retailers coming to Columbia Place. SC Place to be located on the upper level next to Charlotte Russe Smiling faces and beautiful places. 24. You know one of the greatest ways to see what you want in Columbia Place is to call and request it. The customer service representatives have to log what you ask for everytime. Call and ask them for stores that we know could potentially open there. BELK HOLLISTER CO. SPENCER GIFTS HOT TOPIC AEROPOSTALE
