  1. New restaurants in Old Town
  2. And to think I was born in that city in that year. What a weird looking place!
  3. That's great news! And thanks for breaking the silence!
  4. Yes, those are depth readings. Large vessels navigate the harbor via a series of deep channels, which are marked by red and green buoys. Ships are met in the water before they enter the channels by pilots who are intimately familiar with the local waterways and who guides the vessel through the harbor. The channel system linking HR's port facilities and the Chesapeake Bay is at all points at least 60' deep, so they can handle the largest container ships in the world.
  5. As an Easter gift to the users of this forum, I have decided to release eight British sailors I've been holding since I found them snooping around my backyard last week - and I've decided to post this nifty new development map I put together earlier. As far as I know it is entirely up to date, but feel free to make changes/suggestions. It does not include completed or nearly-completed projects (like Trader and HH) or projects with slim/no chance of being built (Hoffler Tower). Still, it's an impressive map and I hope you all enjoy! Downtown Norfolk Development Map Key A. Belmont at Freemason B. Granby Tower C. Federal courthouse expansion D. Virginia Arts Festival headquarters E. Wachovia Center F. St. Paul
  6. Sleek new cruise terminal set to welcome passengers This terminal is truly amazing. I have a feeling it will be a tremendous success for Norfolk!

That footbridge is one of my favorite spots in Norfolk. Good shots, vdogg!
  8. Most likely, it will not stand out in any significant way from the existing medical buildings it will join. Based on the most current renderings we have, it won't be much (if any) higher than the others - and certainly not any more interesting.

Thanks, I'm glad everybody likes it! Br0guy, I'm studying at Temple now (History MA program) but unfortunately I don't have any pictures of the campus. I probably will try to get out once everything starts to bloom. I love spring!
  10. Not a moment too soon either. Waterside is getting a bit dated and, while it is still a vital spot downtown, it's good that we can now emphasize newer developments. With 150 E Main, Trader, 388 Boush, Harbor Heights, and soon with Wachovia Center, Hilton, and Granby Tower, we're really seeing a shift to the other half of downtown - it almost seems as though the old business center (BoA, Norfolk Southern, that big clump of older towers) seems peripheral to all these new developments.

It's been quite a beautiful day here in Philadelphia too! Speaking of which, I have a bunch of Phila pictures that I will soon be posting to my flickr account - when I do, I'll put a link in the off-topic page for those who are interested.

Thanks, I really dig that perspective on the city! As always I had a wonderful visit... no matter how long I am away, Hampton Roads will always be home!

A few random pictures wouldn't fit in any development threads.
  14. Nothing special here, but I have a couple of pictures from the renovation going on at Duke(?) and Brambleton.
  15. The new cruise terminal looks GREAT in person! They really are almost finished, and you can walk all around the outside now. It really completes the space next to Nauticus. The boat slips and retractable footbridge - very cool!
  16. No surprises there. For the last several months this has seemed to be the council's pet project.
  17. I think a large concrete base like that has great potential to work really well... not sure about it's use here yet, but I'll suspend my judgment until it's done.
  18. Hmm...I don't know what I think about this at this point. I'm not quite as impressed as I thought I would be, granted it's not done yet. At least we know the interior will be amazing.

Well, I was going to come down and take some pictures but the weather got me stuck here in Phila... maybe next weekend.
  20. I'll be down this weekend and I'll definitely take some.

I found this awesome picture browsing on flickr and asked the author if I could share it. I thought you'd all enjoy it. Also, I wanted to re-post this one because I think it is one of my favorite pictures of Norfolk. Just imaging this view once we can add Granby Tower ...almost looks like a real city! Harbor Heights is only like 2 stories in this picture too! But these pictures are just a prelude to the wonderful shots you'll get from me when I visit again this weekend!
  22. Not much of a surprise... No stadium will likely be built for at least a decade
  23. Well, at least it's not just Norfolk...as though sharing misfortune makes it any better! I just worry that people will look at Baci's inability to follow through on their season and say "Oh I always knew Norfolk (or Richmond, or wherever) was no real player when it comes to the arts - this proves it."
  24. Norfolk will produce three Broadway at Chrysler shows itself An interesting turn of events... I sure hope Norfolk is able to replace Baci with a reliable producer soon. As much as those shows aren't really my cup of tea, I know they are for a lot of people and it would be a shame if Norfolk takes the blame for not being able to present these shows.
  25. That last picture is of the church that used to house a bunch of music dept classrooms, right? Does anybody know what's going on there?
