  1. You guys are getting more snow down there than we have had so far in Washington this year! Nice pics!
  2. Gallery Place Escalator Goes Into Reverse One of the 30 escalators at the Gallery Place Metro station went into reverse this morning, causing minor injuries to at least two people. This is not the first time this has happened. The escalators may be turnbed off completely during the inauguration. The District clearly needs to invest more in the aging infrastructure of the Metro system. Unfortunately, the money for this is not readily available. It's clearly more popular to give money to Detroit right now. The Washington Post
  3. Bleah. The building looks awful- neither here nor there in style. Not too great for being close to Old Town....
  4. Pictures Tell the Story A recnt set of pictures from David Watkins shows that progress is being made on farish Street and at the King Edward. Storefronts which have long been shuttered are finally being cleaned out and made ready for new businesses. This will not be an easy project, especially given the current economic climate. What's important is that Watkins and others have the tenacity to see the project through to a finish which will be closer than many might suppose. The amout of work which still needs to be done in this long forgotten area of downtown Jackson is daunting. It's good to see that things are moving after almost eight years of inaction. David Watkins' Album at Smugmug
  5. Timely post indeed. I'll actually be in Florida tomorrow. Let's hope the election process there is better this time around. This town is going to go nuts tomorrrow....
  6. I'm really happy to see that the Kress project has turned out so well. Perhaps the second floor of the chop house can be added at a later time. In any event, this is just the sort of thing needed in downtown Baton Rouge and in many others like it.
  7. David Watkins Featured in the Clarion-Ledger Developer David Watkins received a welcome profile in the Clarion-Ledger today. It's good to see that the state's most prominent newspaper is finally getting behind some of the remarkable development in downtown Jackson. The comment section, however, attests to the stubbornness of some who refuse to believe in anything good outside of the suburban enclave. The Clarion-Ledger
  8. St. Paul's Episcopal Church Rectory, Woodville, Mississippi
  9. Magnolia Hall in Natchez. Built in 1856 by Thiomas Henderson. Later the Magnolia Inn and Trinity Episcopal Day School. I went to second and third grade here. Now owned by the Natchez Garden Club.
  10. Farish Street- Official Turnover to Watkins Group in 1 Month The Farish Street project will likely be turned over to David Watkins and his team in about a month. It will be good to see movement on a project which had been given up for dead. I have faith that all will be well now. The Clarion-Ledger
  11. The Camellia Grill on Carrollton Avenue
  12. Someone has a cool vanishing-edge pool....taken from the 23rd floor terrace of the Windsor Court Hotel
  13. The Julius Rothschild Store in Woodville- presently being restored. The building was one of several built by Jewish merchants in Woodville in the late 1800s. Woodville had a thriving Jewish community until the coming of the boll weevil destroyed the cotton economy.
  14. Blue Water Bay- Western Harrison County Developers have proposed a large new resort in western Harrison County which could eventually cost $1.5 billion. I know we've all heard this before, but the rendering does loook nice. Let's hope there is real substance behind this proposal. In truth, I would prefer to see such development concentrated in a casino district instead of dispersed throughout the county. The Sun Herald
  15. I really like the idea of adding a residential component. From the article, it appears as though there will be a hotel and restaurants. Perhaps the residential component could be added later, but it would be better if it were integrated into the plans sooner rather than later. In any event, this should be good for the county.
  16. Mechanic Theater The MEchanic Theater, a mid-sixties brutalist style landmark in downtown Baltimore, has been denied landmark status by the city. This clears the way for most of the theater's interior to be demolished as part of a plan to incorporate most of the exterior in a new high-rise condominium project. I'm not ecstatic with the decision, but this may be the best that could have ben hoped for in this situation. The Baltimore Sun
  17. Tivoli Site Offered for Sale The site of the Tivoli Hotel is now being offered for sale- 3.2 acres for $11.5m. I would think that a casino or condo development may spring up here, but the fate of the last proposal might cast doubt upon such thoughts. If whomever buys the property is smart enough not to propose something too ungainly, the proposal might just go through. If, on the other hand, the proposal is anything like the last (billion dollar) proposal, it might meet resistance. This is an important site which deserves to have something architecturally significant. I hope that whatever is proposed will be appropriate. Loppnet
