  1. The section west of Eastern to Lafayette will not have brick. I was very sad to find out that when they widened Wealthy Street back in the 70's, instead of covering the brick with asphalt, they took the brick out. This pretty much eliminates the City placing brick back in because it doesn't qualify for funding. I don't think I'll ever understand why they took the brick out. Thankfully the street will be narrowed to 40 feet with asphalt driving lanes and concrete parking lanes. Hopefully the City's application for ornamental lighting and other streetscape amenities is approved by MDOT. We won't know until April 2nd. If it
  2. Postponing the Wealthy Street construction between Division & Jefferson until 2008 gives us one solid east/west connection in the midst of the other street construction projects planned this summer/fall. Franklin will be jammed as it is the thru-traffic detour for two other street construction projects; Cherry isn't an option to get from downtown to the east end neighborhoods because it will be closed in two sections for the summer. Leaving Wealthy Street open to Lafayette SE will help direct local-access traffic closer to the businesses on Wealthy Street. This summer in order to get to many of the businesses on Wealthy Street between Union & Eastern, local-access traffic will have to take Logan and then head north on side streets. Here is one list of all the proposed street construction projects planned this summer in Uptown & Heritage Hill: Fuller Ave Project FTWM #4 Fuller from Wealthy to Franklin Sherman from Fuller to Giddings Cherry Street Project Cherry Street from Warren to Hollister Other Cherry Street Projects: Cherry Street from Prospect to Jefferson Cherry Street from Division to Commerce Wealthy Street Project FTWM #5 Wealthy Street from Union Ave. to Eastern Ave. (including the Wealthy/Union intersection) James Avenue from Wealthy St. to Donovan Ct Eastern Avenue boulevard removal south of Wealthy Wealthy Street Project FTWM #2 Wealthy Street from Union thru Prospect
  3. The best news I heard yesterday was that the stretch of Wealthy Street between Division & Lafayette planned for construction this summer, has been moved to the 2008 construction schedule. This is the section of round-a-bouts. The project is still a go; postponing it until 2008 is good news for many reasons.
  4. Stopped in to see the new owner of 700 Wealthy Street SE. We should see good things happening here over the summer. Stopped by Wild Bunch or rang the doorbell. I spoke with the owner's wife & at the time there was a private meeting taking place, so my tour is postponed to next week. It was great to see people out today all over the neighborhood!
  5. Saturday night I'm heading to San Chez Bistro III for a "Spanish Wine Event" on the third floor. Is anyone here going? Great views of downtown from that floor.
  6. Pothole, pothole, pothole! Lyon Street by Martha's is horrible, filled with the big potholes.
  7. Here is a zoning map of the Uptown area. (PRD's not included) Wealthy Street spans three historic districts: Wealthy Theatre, Cherry Hill, and Heritage Hill.
  8. Wasn't the Church the birthplace of Cornerstone University, known as the Baptist Bible Institute?
  9. Wealthy Morrison, second wife of Judge Jefferson Morrison, the first Kent County Probate Judge. Joshleo, I have a collection of historical photos of razed and still-standing buildings on Wealthy.
  10. He lives in the home across the street, just east of the WSB. He also owns the vacant lot on the sw corner of Wealthy/James SE. I'm looking into joining with my electric scooter!
  11. Thanks for putting this together! Yes, Wealthy Street west of Eastern has tremendous opportunity to revitalize more, increasing the present work being done along the street. Summer 2007: Wealthy Street between Eastern and Union will be reconstructed. The width of the street will be reduced to 40 feet; currently there are sections as wide as 60 feet. By narrowing the street, properties will now have a 12 ft setback from the curb, which will increase pedestrian traffic, while slowing down those speedy drivers. This will also provide an opportunity for retailers to offer sidewalk tables, creating more of a third space for us citizens. Originally, installing new brick with concrete parking lanes and ornamental lighting was part of this construction project. Unfortunately when the street was widened in the 70
  12. We had traditional wonton soup, it was quite delicious. My Dad makes the best wontons! We also had Xi Yow Gai (soy sauce chicken), Cha Siu Bau's (think Chinese-style BBQ pork surrounded by sweet bread), Cha Siu spareribs, Mapo Tofu, Chow Fan, and Bak Fan. Not a whole lot of Dim Sum or Chow Fun, fat stir-fried rice noodles, but it was all good!
  13. Gung Hei Fat Choi! Happy Chinese New Year! Today marks the end of the Year of the Dog, as tomorrow we ring in the Year of the Boar otherwise known as the Pig. The Pig is said to be the luckiest of all the Chinese astrology signs, as it means money & prosperity. Piggy banks, get it.... During this holiday, it is said to that China holds the largest migration of people, as travelers scurry to get home to celebrate with family. My cousin Yao Ming Lei returned home to Guangzhou after working for two weeks in Shenzhen to celebrate with my great-aunt and his family. Over in Ottawa Hills, 26 of my family members will gather to celebrate the New Year over a traditional Cantonese feast & the passing around of lucky red envelopes.
