  1. VB, Chesapeake and Norfolk came together in 2020 to create the Hampton Roads Regional Arena Authority. Military Circle was listed as one of the possible sites. https://www.wavy.com/news/top-stories/va-house-passes-hampton-roads-regional-arena-bill/
  2. ODU's capital construction projects page has been updated with two new projects. First is the Public Safety building, which will be a $4.5 million renovation of the ODU Inn. Second is a 48th Street Renovation which includes making it a paved walkway. https://www.odu.edu/facilities/construction/capital-projects
  3. We have some updated renderings of this mixed-use development on the City Planning Agenda for Oct. 27th. There are more renderings on the Agenda at the attached link. The agenda item is as follows: ODU REAL ESTATE FOUNDATION, for a change of zoning from C-C (Community – Commercial) to UV (University Village) at 1056, 1064, 1070, 1080 W 39th Street, N S W 39th Street (GPIN: 1428672669, 1428672647, and 1428670645), 1035- 1089, W 40th Street, 1041-1083 W 41st Street, and 3912, 4000, 4024 Hampton Boulevard. 4. Virginia Business has a new article on the potential merger between ODU and EVMS: https://www.virginiabusiness.com/article/a-stitch-in-time-odu-evms-eye-potential-merger/
  5. Probably because it will be a cheap temporary structure that won’t age well over an extended period of time.
  6. The ARBs next regular meeting on Sept. 19th will be hyper focused on St Pauls redevelopment. From the agenda it states the following: Continuation of the streetscape and housing design for St. Paul's Area - Tidewater Gardens. As the design of the neighborhood moves east, the housing becomes smaller in scale, and diverse in type as it reaches the Blue Greenway. We will review the design in a block-by-block order, in the following sequence: Blocks 6, 5, 11, 4, 3B, 3A, 2 http://norfolkcityva.iqm2.com/Citizens/FileOpen.aspx?Type=1&ID=2074&Inline=True
  7. In the city planning agenda for their September meeting is a zoning amendment for University Village. Guessing this is tied to the mixed-use development they want to build with the Publix store as an anchor: CITY PLANNING COMMISSION, for a zoning text amendment to the Norfolk Zoning Ordinance to modify UV (University Village). Staff contact: Susan Pollock at (757) 664- 4765, [email protected]
  8. Recently ODU President Dr. Hemphill, AD Wood Selig and baseball coach Chris Finwood hosted a dinner to honor the donors that will make this stadium a reality. After construction, the stadium will be called Bud Metheny Ballpark at the Elmer Family Baseball Complex thanks to the generosity of Dennis Elmer and his family. Construction on this project should start after the next baseball season.
  9. No. This was just phase 1. The stadium is expandable to 30k seats before any land needs to be cleared.
  10. A friend of mine is opening a brewery in The Colony at Lamberts Point, the old gas factory that IP Configure renovated. Sanctuary tacos is moving in there as well. That development is next door to this one.
  11. Another Broken Egg is not the same as Broken Egg Bistro. Another Broken Egg is a franchise throughout the south and midwest. They opened their first in Virginia in 2021 in Williamsburg.
  12. The Bruce Smith project for the lot adjacent to the Scope was approved recently.
  13. "Military Circle Mall is closing and is set to be demolished in early 2023 for future redevelopment of the site. The Norfolk Economic Development Authority voted on the decision Wednesday." https://www.wavy.com/news/local-news/norfolk/military-circle-mall-closing-at-end-of-2022-set-to-be-demolished-ahead-of-redevelopment/
  14. Transparency only occurred thanks to city receipt records. So I'm happy not all of them followed the Mayor's lead, otherwise we wouldn't even know this trip occurred.
  15. Apologies, I was working from memory and my timeline was way off. It was years before they closed. We lived in the same building in 2012 to 2014 and at the time it was performing at that level. I'm also guessing the performance she was referring to was net revenues where their performance likely shined thanks to their discounted lease at MacArthur.
  16. Had a friend who was the manager at Nordstrom at MacArthur. She told me they were the third best performing Nordstrom in sales at the time of their closure. So I'm not sure you can blame that on area residents. And their departure from the mall was the one that broke the camels back.
  17. Here’s an article about the work being done at ODU to make this merger a reality; https://www.virginiabusiness.com/article/odu-evms-merger-possibility-arises-with-new-officer-hire/
  18. Was looking at state budget numbers. ODU got $4.5mil to “renovate public safety building” and $2.5mil for repairs to Rollins Hall for FY23. Most interested in the public safety building, as that is likely a new space for their police force since it’s unnamed.
  19. If you like the area, why would you care what they think?
  20. The article does note that this land will be held for future expansion.
  21. EVMS is selling Smith-Rogers Hall, the school's oldest building, and surrounding land to the City of Norfolk and the Chrysler Museum. They will use the property as an expansion location for the art museum. https://www.pilotonline.com/inside-business/vp-nw-evms-building-sale-0709-20220707-qjnrqqlaazanvgfmzngpfkojpy-story.html
  22. ODUs president Dr. Hemphill sent out an email to faculty and staff today updating them on the MOU signed in December with EVMS and Sentara. In the update, he says that the focus is now on fully integrating the two schools together by 2023. This would be a great thing for both institutions and Norfolk. You can read the email at the tweet attached.
  23. They’ve made a lot of progress recently.
