My FL born wife won't swim in lakes when we travel because of gators.  I've tried and tried, but she won't.  I'm like "Babe, there are no gators in lakes in Colorado.  You can swim here.  We're all swimming here." but it makes no difference, she doesn't swim in fresh water.

The logic about sharks in ocean water doesn't seem to apply.  This woman is highly educated and very intelligent.  It is just bred into her that you don't swim in lakes.

I’m just happy to hear I’m not the only one who cannot dip into fresh water.

My understanding is Disney put the new hotel on hold for different reasons.  The location is not covered by tax breaks.  Disney is effectively forcing the Anaheim city council to grant it tax breaks at its selected location.

As for the wage issue, your argument has been made since the minimum wage was first enacted years ago.

Do you have a source for your “understanding”?

It's already becoming unrecognizable and will be spectacular 3-5 years from now.

I remember going to a number of different clubs in some of the warehouses there in the late 90s.  I really now wish I had pictures of the state of underdevelopment at that time to compare it to now.

    Ok.

I was just there 3 months ago.  How did I miss that 700 footer?  How many floors can they build in 3 full months?  6-8 floors?  Maybe I was fixated on the traffic on the Rickenbacker and the Ten Mus Park row of scrapers and missed that new one to the right and recessed behind there.

That building depicted is out of scale, though.  As depicted it looks like an 800-900 footer because the tallest buildings behind there are in fact 700 footers, and Ten Mus Park is like 575'.  That's an old photo too, because there is a very cool looking scraper to the south of Ten Mus Park that recently topped off that's a 700 footer as well.

Also, this project is nowhere near the Brightline station.  But, Metromover is to it's east.

It’s about 3 blocks north of the Brightline Station. It may appear further because until late this area of downtown Miami has remained as abandoned lots and homeless encampments for decades. Once fully built out, there will be a seemless transition from  Miami World Center into the CBD.

Does that get weird around the holidays?  It must be hard surprising yourself with gifts.

That was the main redeeming feature for The Florida Project (Kissimmee) for me.

    Monster and the Florida Project...

Kissimmee finds its way into pop culture.

Anderson St.? Apparently, we have very different memories. I don't recall it being anything but an autocentric racetrack since it was made a one-way pair with South St in the '60's and especially once construction of the East-West began in the early '70's. Obviously, I'm missing something.

As someone who walks almost everywhere downtown from the Y on Mills to Hamburger Mary's on W. Church St. (I live on Eola Dr.,) I'm all about ped-friendly streets. I can't recall Anderson St. being one of those in my lifetime.

I’m just suggesting it’s gone from bad to worse. A concept surely you can understand. This is hardly a controversial opinion.

Where did Anderson go? I drove on it this morning from Division to Rosalind. I'm confused -  are you talking about the exit from I4 ?

Anderson is a victim of progress. When was the last time you walked down it?

Instead of making it more urban, it’s become more hostile for pedestrians as a result of the ultimate I-4 redesign.

The interchange does go a long way to make our downtown look more like a typically successful Sunbelt city. Those who bemoan our lack of height downtown should consider this a heckuva consolation prize.

The loss of Anderson as a downtown street over the last decade continues bother me.

I must agree with sunshine on this - a massive amount of wasted space by FDOT.

To inform the team that a permit application has been filed for a new multi family project   Currently called the Orange & Robinson apartments at the north west corner of Orange and Robinson .

So the permit calls for generally the same amount of units/parking  as Modera and 520.

    LOL.

I will be passing the free-pass information to the Disney unions.  It's great stuff for their contract negotiations.

Let me remind you . . . I am the ONLY person on UrbanPlanet who talks about living wages.  AT ALL.  It would be great to see Disney workers earning enough to move out of their cars or the roach-motels on 192.

An extra $1k per month would really help.  Is that somehow controversy?

    Some "attack"

I ask you again to block me.   I can only ask so many times.

This is not correct.  There are plenty of well informed people here who have something to say about the state of the Orlando economy.

If only you would give them the oxygen...

Portland officials have selected the next route for that city's light-rail system.

    See the pics.

The route is a perfectly ordinary road.  Nothing special at all.  The rail will run down the middle of the road.  It will also include a 12 mile bike route.

    Not complicated stuff.

It is amazing how other cities just find  solutions.  Orlando officials, meanwhile, ring their hands and whine.  When they do make decisions, they are unattractive half-measures.

This has nothing to do with SunRail.

I love the idea of a food hall.  I think we need to dial back the expectations though.

The Chelsea Market is economically viable for a number of reasons. First, it is located in a huge (1 million+ square feet) office building.  There are a number of successful businesses and studios there.  My wife and kids attended a Food Network taping upstairs.

The Chelsea Market is also the center of NYC's Google campus. The building itself is owned by Google.  Thousands of Google employees work in the market and surrounding buildings.

The Chelsea Market is also located in NYC's most fashionable neightborhood and it's located on the High Line. It's also located a few minutes from the Financial District, one of the great employment centers in the world.

My point is that the Chelsea Market is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of place. It cannot be easily reproduced just anywhere.  There is a reason why it make economic sense.

We need to think about something much less grandiose in Orlando.  A small food hall with a beer garden might work (and it would be my preferred choice).  Maybe something like the East End.   A Foxtail would work there as well (it would be preferred over ubiquitous Starbucks).

I would avoid any soulless chains.

Stop being so small minded. Orlando should have a Chelsea Market already!

I don't give a rip if you like me or not.  There are very good odds I wouldn't like you either (if I actually knew you).  But I will withhold judgment.  That's how rational people think.

But given your distaste for me, kindly block me. I don't expect to ever hear from you again.  If I do, I will not respond.

Shan’t. I quite enjoy your uninformative posts with total lack of self-awareness.

I will continue to follow you in earnest.

And if you'd rather talk about Lakeland or Bok Gardens, that is best saved for another website.  They have as much relationship to Orlando as Ocala.  They have no place on a website called UrbanPlanet.

You should spend more time in these places. It’s everything you rally for. A bit funny you are so unaware.

Based on the responses, I must assume everyone is just delighted with the local architecture.

I personally think it sucks.  It's totally unimaginative.  And everyone here knows it.  Everyone here talks about it frequently.  But I mentioned it . . . and now everything has changed.   Whatever.

In a related note . . can we end this notion that ANYONE is happy with the decentralized nature of Orlando?  If that is the case, everyone's comments totally belie them.  All  I hear are people desperate for Orlando to be a big-city with loads of downtown development.  That's my whole take-away from this.

Let's at least be honest about our comments and our intentions on UrbanPlanet.  This is not an exercise in community boosterism.  It's a website about URBAN development with commenters literally begging for more urban development.  When I make a comment though, all of the sudden Orlando's greatest asset is it decentralized nature.  I say bullsh*t.

Can we at least attempt to be consistent?

And if you'd rather talk about Lakeland or Bok Gardens, that is best saved for another website.  They have as much relationship to Orlando as Ocala.  They have no place on a website called UrbanPlanet.

It’s your attitude we don’t like.

Is pic #3 the Marriott Residence Inn at Mama B's? :silly:

The Stata Center at MIT - a building universally hated by MIT students and administration alike for its inefficient design and a host of structural problems (Gehry was sued by the school shortly thereafter). Needless to say, Gehry hasnt worked in Boston ever since.

Some of the celebrity architects who have designed buildings in the area: Michael Graves, Robert A.M. Stern, Cesar Pelli, Frank Lloyd Wright.

Also, Nils Schweizer (acolyte of Wright) and Barton Myers, who both designed noted buildings downtown.

Onward to Addison Mizner (helped plan the design for Rollins, which has won kudos as one of the most attractive college campuses in the U.S.)

Also: Milton Medary, architect of Bok Tower, whose fusion of Deco with Gothic is virtually unparalleled. While we're there, Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. who designed the grounds.

Once again, there's this obsession that everything has to be in downtown Orlando. To assume that is to miss the very essence of the region.
