Travel observations and new developments of other cities and countries

Vilnius, Lithuania. The first photo is the Soviet-era sports palace. The TV tower was the location of independence protests in 1990 in which protestors were shot by the Soviet OMON riot police -

Warsaw from a past trip. The much-reviled Palace of Culture and Science, almost 800’ high, was completed in Stalinist Gothic style in 1955. The Poles don’t like it since it was a “fraternal gift” from the USSR. -

Same. Countless times. It’s a 31-mile round-trip ride from Germantown.

Not to mention the Metro Water sewage treatment plant next door, especially in the summer. Maybe the new additions to the the plant will ameliorate the occasional bad smells.

Looks like the garage is up to 5th level and columns are rising. Looking south from new asphalt road and circle off Cowan Street.

You should take the train to Sintra if you have time. Trains leave every 30 minutes from Rossio Station. Also, if you have time, grab a train to Cascais from Cais do Sodre station on the waterfront. Grab a meal at the TimeOut market nearby. -

My Airbnb was just below that miradouro! Are you headed to Porto? If you have time, also visit Braga, north of Porto. That’s where I’d love to move. -

I believe so. We toured the site as part of an Historic Germantown Association group and I recall there will also be at least ten restaurants, some located inside the old plant with a very cool industrial chic aesthetic. With Moderna Germantown straddling it, I wonder if the Delek USA tank farm will eventually go away? I can’t imagine living in Moderna and looking at a massive oil facility.

It looks like they’ll be doubling the width of Monroe between 2nd Ave North and the Neuhoff project. I expect that Monroe between 3rd and 2nd will also be repaved after the street closure for the construction of Artists Lofts is lifted. The old Southern Broom and Mop factory at the NE corner of 3rd Ave N and Monroe St has now been through three restaurant iterations, most recently Saint Stephen. It’s now closed. It seems like a cursed location, although the cannabis-centric Buds & Brews across the street seems to be thriving. -
Neuhoff project looking NE from the Cumberland River bikeway and East from Monroe St at Second Avenue. SW residential tower up to tenth floor.

Artists Lofts Germantown up to second level of underground garage. Looking SE from the storage building on Monroe Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues North. Much needed traffic lights added at intersection of 3rd Ave N and Monroe Street. I like the move to the West Coast-style black signal stacks, which offer greater visibility than the yellow ones. -

Views of Lisbon and Porto from a recent trip. I was impressed by the size of the Lisbon metro area (2.4 million) and the number of high rise condos and apartments, mainly under 20 stories. Lisbon views from my Airbnb. The Golden Gate-looking bridge was built in the 60’s and is named after the 1974 revolution that overthrew the dictatorship. Views of Porto. Metro area 1.8 million. -

Recent progress on Modera Germantown, taken from Adams St. looking northeast. Panoramic view of the river and the storage tanks at the oil company.
